Housing design competition in north Minneapolis

The City of Minneapolis, the Builders Association of the Twin Cities (BATC), and its Builder Outreach Foundation (BOF) have announced a housing design competition in north Minneapolis to rebuild the community affected by foreclosure. The competition, "Bearden Place: A Housing Competition in the Artists' Core," is to design six live/work units for the site on the northwest corner of Plymouth and Sheridan Avenues North.

The sponsors are calling for innovative ideas that address the challenge of designing high quality, affordable live/work spaces in a sustainable manner. Each unit must not exceed $175,000 and the development must meet MN GreenStar Bronze Certification for new construction.

BATC will serve as the developer and will manage the construction process. The association's members will work with the selected design team to provide construction and cost management for the winning proposal.

A public exhibit of design entries is scheduled for June 2010.

Site visits are scheduled for March 17, 2010 and March 29, 2010 at noon. Submissions are due Wednesday, April 21, 2010, 5 p.m. to the City of Minneapolis, Department of Community Planning & Economic Development, 105 Fifth Avenue South, Suite 200, Minneapolis, MN 55401.
