Murphy publishes business case for greening your grounds

College of Design Advisory Board member Richard Murphy (Landscape Architecture and BLA, 1975; BED, 1975) has published "The business case for greening your grounds" on MinnPost.com. Murphy notes that when businesses decide to "go green" they mostly focus on the inside of their facilities, maintaining traditional lawns on the outside. Instead, Murphy advocates, businesses should green their grounds "with native prairies, stormwater management systems and tree plantings -- greenery that is not only beautiful, but enhances -- not hurts -- the environment."

Using his own business -- Murphy Warehouse Co., a fourth-generation logistics firm -- as an example, Murphy writes the company has saved more than $500,000 in costs since it began greening its grounds more than 15 years ago.
