Howard to lecture on suburbanization and straightness

Clayton Howard, a visiting lecturer at the University of New Hampshire, presents "The Closet and the Cul de Sac: Suburbanization and the Politics of Straightness in Postwar California" on Thursday, November 4, 2010, 4:00-5:30 p.m., in 125 Nolte.

Howard's lecture ties the outbreak of the "culture wars" over homosexuality to the expansion of the federal government, suburbanization, and the political mobilization of parents in the three decades after World War II. Focusing on the San Francisco Bay Area, it traces the parallel rise of Gay Liberation and the Religious Right by focusing on shifting housing patterns in the postwar metropolis.

The lecture is sponsored by the Design, Architecture, and Culture group of Quadrant.
