Roald Gundersen, AIA, (BArch/BED; 1989) is founder and principal architect at Whole Trees (WT) Architecture and Services and his company was recently awarded a Federal Small Business Innovation and Research Grant. Whole Trees has "partnered with the USDA Forest Products Laboratory to document and verify the strength and structural characteristics of WT branching timbers. The grant funds in-field acoustic tomography on branching timbers, and subsequent mechanical tests to produce scientific data on the structural integrity of branching columns, proving the potential of this abundant woodland waste material."
