Garments by apparel design alumni Niki English (B.S. Clothing Design '11) and Hilary Hubanks (B.S. Clothing Design '11) appear in the latest anthology of Emerging Fashion Designers 3 (Schiffer Publishing). The publication showcases work ranging from evening wear to sportswear to children's wear created by recent graduates from 16 fashion design programs in the United States.
Hubanks submitted the design she created during a semester at the London College of Fashion where she took a corsetry class. "I was very inspired by English culture," recalls Hubanks, "the autumnal landscape colors, the wools and tweeds used in classic English tailoring, and the look of feathers from different native birds." She combined these inspirations for the corset featured in Emerging Fashion Designers 3.She currently works as a Costume Technician and Colorist at Vee Corporation in Minneapolis and hopes to eventually pursue a master's degree in Fiber Art, Illustration, Fiber Technology, Print Design, or Fashion Design.
The work submitted by English was originally created for the eco-design contest, Sol Inspirations, in April 2011. The contest challenged designers to create three pieces using eco-conscious, sustainable materials and solar panels. Her series was inspired by solar flares and UV images taken by NASA to document them. She was one of five contestants (including Christopher Straub and Ramon Lawrence Coleman from Project Runway) to participate contest.
She currently lives in New York City and works for Ann Taylor.
