229084_1819169691006_1593060438_31902014_432974_n.jpgHello, my name is Eric Maass. I am originally from Freedom, Wisconsin, but have been living in Minneapolis for four years now while attending the University of Minnesota. I come from a relatively small family of myself, younger brother (20) and my mom and dad. I started my college career at the University of Wisconsin - River Falls majoring in Horticulture with an emphasis in Landscape Design. I completed one year there when I transferred to the University of Minnesota to pursue my Bachelor of Environmental Design and later applied for and was accepted to the Accelerated Bachelor of Design which I will talk more about in later posts.

While living at home I got my start in the Landscape Design Industry working for the Freedom Town Parks System and Premier Landscape Services, LLC. Working for the parks system gave me a great appreciation for the time and care it takes to keep local city parks running and in pristine condition to allow these spaces to be positive and enjoyable places for the local population to enjoy. My time at Premier Landscape Services was equally as enjoyable as it was a relatively small company which allowed me to do a great many tasks instead of mastering just one. I was able to work on everything from a brick retaining wall, to installing pervious pavers and planting designs to grading out a person yard according to a predefined plan to control the way water would run on the site. This gave me great background knowledge for my future classes both at UW-River Falls and at the U of M.

Currently I am a 2nd year Masters of Landscape Architecture (MLA) Student at the U of M. This semester is designed to get us into the more technical aspects of Landscape Architecture in comparison to last year which was geared more towards the art of design and the design process. So I am sure you'll get to read plenty about topics like GIS (Geographic Information Systems, a computer program used for analysis physical environmental data) and another class called Urban Stormwater Management. I was also able to take an elective this semester called Rec 5111 - Sports Facilities taught by Dr. Turman, who is the current director of Recreational Facilities for the U of M. We're going to be talking about funding, management, planning and design of both public and private recreational/sports facilities which I hope to use to help in my Capstone/Thesis project next year as a 3rd year MLA Student.

Hello Future Leaders/Architects,

I'm sure you are wondering who I am, how I got here, and where I plan to go in life. Well, a long time ago in a land not far from here, I, Holly Engle, attended the University of Minnesota Duluth. While surviving the bitter, cold tundra north of Minneapolis, I realized my true passion in life was architecture. After finally transferring to Minneapolis, I wanted to do things "right," so I took the initiative to utilize the University of Minnesota's resources. I met with career counselors, my advisor, and faculty, and joined the American Institute of Architecture Students (AIAS). Okay that last bit about the architecture club is kind of ironic; I was intrigued by the t-shirts so I joined. All in all, my first year at the University of Minnesota was instrumental in shaping who I am today.

Since my first year, I have held a myriad of titles including Student Representative for the Marcy-Holmes Neighborhood Association, Environmental Intern for the Seward Neighborhood Group, Intern for the Women's Environmental Institute, Y-Tutors Coordinator, and Vice President of AIAS-MN. In my last year of being an architecture undergrad, I have been elected President of AIAS-MN. Through this position, I have obtained an Internship at Cuningham Group and met many Minnesota professionals and College of Design faculty. Pro Tip: don't forget to network.

As of now, I am looking outward toward "real" life or graduate school. In addition, I am always looking for another way to make a difference. Maybe I should run for Student Senate. You only have one life, right?

Ta ta for now,

Holly Engle

I'm Ashley, 19 years old, and a Minnesota native. I'm a pre-interior design student in the College of Design at the University of Minnesota. I'm a sophomore here at the U, and this is my first year studying interior design. (So far, so good!)

Interior design is something I've always loved, and something I've had a passion for especially in the last 3 years of my life. I think what I love most about interior design is how it incorporates problem solving with creativity. I also love that after graduation I'll have many different career options.

In addition to being a student, I also have a work-study position in the Student Services office of the College of Design, which I absolutely love! I work as an office assistant for the College to Career Program that is especially great because I complete a wide variety of tasks during each shift.

Last year I lived in Pioneer hall, or "Pio" as us students call it. It's a dorm located on the east bank's "superblock". Living in the dorms was a great experience (especially as a freshman), because it gave me a chance to meet new people and slowly transition from home life to college life. This year I am living in my first apartment! It's a huge transition from being at home or in the dorms, but at the same time, I really enjoy the change of pace and new atmosphere.

What more can I say? Obviously I have a strong interest in interior design, but in addition to that, I'm also a lover of fashion! I love love LOVE shopping and reading fashion magazines. I also enjoy DIY projects, art, baking, reading, movies, photography, and random adventures with friends.

That's all for now, but you'll hear from me soon!

A Little Introduction

Hi friends! I am going to tell you all a little bit about myself. To start it off, my name is Sasenka, but I typically go by Sashka. I am currently a junior and majoring in Retail Merchandising. I was originally born in Bosnia but moved to the United States at the age of six. I then lived in North Dakota until I started college here at the University of Minnesota-Twin Cities.
I have very strong interests in both fashion and business, which is why I chose to study Retail Merchandising. My desire and love for fashion began when I was nine; the day I first flipped through a catalogue. Wanting to improve the outfits, I started to draw and create my very own looks. My curiosity for business came in high school, when I got involved in DECA. I was very intrigued and soon realized that I wanted my future to include the fascinating world of business. From there, my aspirations grew; I decided that I wanted to be either a buyer or a clothing storeowner. Those dreams, however, quickly changed. A new dream, one that uses fashion to benefit the greater good, came into my heart. Presently, I have hopes in starting a non-profit organization, something similar to TOMS shoes, to help those less fortunate.
Besides fashion and business, my other hobbies include dance and photography. I have been dancing my whole life and simply love it! I never miss an opportunity to break out in dance. It is such a wonderful form of self-expression. My fascination with photography developed my senior year of high school. I decided that instead of getting my senior pictures professionally done, I would just take them myself; and I did! I purchased a "legit" camera and started snapping away. Enjoying it much more than anticipated, I continued to practice and play around. I now contribute and take photos for a fashion blog, which I started with a friend. It's super fun and a great way to keep up with fashion and current trends.
Well friends, you now know what makes me, me. To put it simply, I am just a girl who wants to use her passions to help those who need it most.

Take care, and have a great day!

Welcome, future Graphic Design students!

Hello, readers/viewers! My name is Patrick Puckett, and I'm a senior in the Graphic Design and Strategic Communications programs here at the University of Minnesota. That second program I mentioned is a really cool way to say Public Relations or Advertising. Basically, next May, I'll be graduating with a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from the College of Design, and a Bachelor of Arts degree from the College of Liberal Arts. I'm pretty excited.

Here's a cool picture of me on the Millenium Bridge in London (the one the Death Eaters destroy in Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince! Fun fact: it took them over a YEAR to do the special effects for that short sequence!)

I'm from Waconia, Minnesota, which is in the southwest corner of the Twin Cities metropolitan area--about 45 minutes away from campus. The choice to come to the U of M was natural to me. I started attending the U as a junior in high school through Minnesota's PSEO program. I'd wanted to be a Gopher since I was about six years old, and I couldn't wait any longer. By my senior year of high school, I decided on Graphic Design as my first major. I started pursuing that degree in Fall 2008.

Over the next few months, I'll be maintaining this blog as a way to help people like you learn about the University of Minnesota and get as excited as I am to be here. I'll be covering a mix of things that I've experienced, things that I know exist that I've dealt less with, and sharing the information about how to access these things as I go along.

Just to tell you a little bit more about myself, I'm a fourth year member in the University of Minnesota Marching Band, and I perform with flags and rifles in the color guard. I live with three people from the band: my friends Ashley and David who play alto saxophone and clarinet, and my boyfriend Derek who is on the field staff this year. Unfortunately, he didn't make the mellophone auditions, but still wanted to be involved in the band.

If marching band is something you're interested in, you can find a link to our site in the ensembles section on the School of Music site at http://music.umn.edu.

I like to listen to music and cook (sometimes both simultaneously!) a lot. I'm not much of a movie-goer, but I do like to buy and watch movies at home! My favorite TV show WAS Brothers and Sisters, BOO ABC for cancelling it!

I'm also a member of a music service fraternity called Kappa Kappa Psi, I'm participating in the National Student Advertising Competition (sponsored by the School of Journalism and Mass Communication -- http://sjmc.umn.edu/ugrad/clubs.html), I'm in the University Honors Program (http://honors.umn.edu), and I'm sure there are some other things I'm forgetting that I'll provide links for as we go along.

I look forward to sharing my experiences with you!

Patrick
