You need to seriously think about giving press to keeping the 5 paragraph essay alive - FOR THE CHILDREN!

As a partner in the lead ad agency A Team I am looking for copywriters who know how to write well. They must be able to write clear, concise messages. I need people who know the basics of grammar, writing and structure but can go outside the box of the five paragraph format. If the five paragraph gets students the basics that is great but they must go beyond. They will never be writing a five paragraph ad. at least it is not likely)

Thank you for your comment. However, I will say that there are times when structure is necessary. For example, as the top girl on the pyramid for cheerleading, I need the underlying support of the rest of the team.

Also, your son and I love each other. We are meant to be. We know this because we are so mature and grown up. I know what real love is, Mrs. Healy. Please try to understand how I feel.

Dear Miss Media,

This is in response to your request for more information on the FPE. My experience is that the FPE gives students the mistaken notion that there is only one correct way to produce an essay, that there is a simplistic fill-in-the-blanks sort of solution to critical thinking; and this is simply incorrect. Writing should be a creative process that allows students to experiment with new forms; so long as there is a beginning, middle, and end to thier story, I would much prefer to read interesting papers rather than patterned regurgitations of whatever their teacher filled their heads with.

I would like to go on record to say that my son benefits from the multigenre project because it gives him an opportunity to express his knowledge in a way that makes sense to him. He knows when it is appropriate to use a five-paragraph essay, yet prefers to express himself creatively whenever possible. This keeps him engaged and motivated.

Thank you for expressing your concern for the success of our students. Structure is highly important in teaching our students, but we also value the creativity and individuality of each of our students. We hope this debate will help highlight the benefits and pitfalls of the FPT and lead us to a decision that will benefit all of our students.

So---I am kind of a big deal---ask me for my thoughts.

I understand that FTP is a touchy issue right now, but I believe that it is an important tool for students to get into creative writing. As long as we, as teachers, emphasize that it is not the only way to write, we should be fine.

That's the only reasonable solution to this crisis.

Realizing I did not address your question in my previous comment, I wanted to quickly send you one more message. The development of writing is happening faster than most of us can completely understand. Students ways of writing have evolved in so many new ways - especially through the rapid influx of technology. We must aim to provide our students with a writing education that will best prepare them to enter this rapidly changing world.
