Sometimes we just have to, as photographers, it’s an impulse that we’re compelled to follow. Resisting goes against who we are, and suppressing the energy leaves us pent-up and crazed like caged animals. Ok, maybe it’s not quite that bad, but there is something in me and most other photographers that drives us to capture a moment just as it is, before it passes. We see it and we want it and we can’t help it. And that’s the thing, it will pass, out of our control, and be gone.
I don’t follow hockey, but one of my favorite quotes is from Wayne Gretzky… “You miss 100% of the shots you never take.” How true for photography. Sometimes I can’t see a great image in a collection from the day because I’m too focused on all the ones I missed, either out of laziness, lack of confidence or technical error. The first two seem to get me the most, and that’s why having friends who share a passion for photography is a real blessing.
Yesterday neither Nate or I would have gone out into the heart of a snowstorm with our camera, stood in the middle of a street with zero visibility for us or the traffic, trespassed into a city park and climbed over barricades and behind frozen waterfalls, and generally acted like complete fools if it wasn’t for our mutual support and egging each other on. In the end I came home with a few shots I liked, and even if I didn’t, I’d be satisfied that I didn’t resist this time.
