Military families suffer from a high rate of child abuse deaths. Violence at work = violence at home? The type of person willing to fight for the empire is also willing to beat their child?
Posted by duver001 at May 17, 2005 10:07 PMI used to work as a civilian employee (as an active duty spouse) on a military base in Germany. I think bigger contributors to the child abuse problem in military bases have to do with the extremely high stress and pretty surprising poverty (at least for most enlisted soldiers).
On the family violence review boards I sat on, we saw case after case of people with this sad combination--and add to it isolation, being away from your extended family, frequent deployments.
There is an excellent institute at Purdue that is doing research on military family life: http://www.mfri.purdue.edu/
