The “Quality Tested” Hay Action at Sauk Centre, Minnesota was started by the Central Minnesota Forage Council with assistance from the University of Minnesota to promote quality testing in the marketplace and to create a marketplace for buyers and sellers of hay. The auction has since been turned over to a privately owned company, the Mid American Auction Company.
Sales are held on the first and third Thursday of each month from September through May. Loads should be in place by 10:30 a.m. so samples can be taken for testing at the Stearns DHIA Laboratory in Sauk Centre. The sale starts at 12:30 p.m. The auction location is as follows: From the intersection of US Highway 71 and I-94 in Sauk Centre go 1/2 mile south on US Highway 71. At Modern Farm Equipment turn left and travel about 1/10 of a mile east on 408th Street to the auction site.
A list of all tested hay lots and bedding materials sold is posted at www.stearnsdhialab.com/. A summary of this data is prepared by U of M County Extension Educator Dan Martens and can be found on the MN Crop News and the Extension Forage webpage at www.extension.umn.edu/forages.
This summary lists the lots sold by groups based on 25 RFV points and bale types. The average price for each group and the range of prices for each group is listed. For example on September 4, 2008 there were 18 loads of medium square alfalfa bales in the RFV 126-150 group. RFV of this group averaged 138 with a range from 126 to 148. Prices for this group ranged from $80 to $160 with an average of $111. The physical condition of the hay is a key price factor along with the forage test information.
There is a history of selected groups from previous years and this summary is update through the current auction season. You’re welcome to call Dan Martens with questions about this report at 1-800-964-4929.
