The three-day Minnesota Crop Pest Management Shortcourse program starts Tuesday, December 13th with an Update for Technical Service Providers program 10:30 AM - 1:30 PM, AFREC Soil Fertility Research Reports 1:00 PM - 2:00 PM and 2:30 - 3:30 PM, Pesticide Applicator Recertification: Category H -- Seed Treatment Session 2:00 PM - 3:30 PM. The CPM Short Course Educational Sessions will begin on Wednesday, December 14th from 8:00 AM - 5:00 PM and continue on Thursday, December 15th from 8:00 AM - 2:20 PM.

 

The NRCS will provide Comprehensive Nutrient Management: An Update for Technical Service Providers (TSPs) on December 13th from 10:30 AM to 1:30 PM. Individual components of Comprehensive Nutrient Management Plans (CNMPs) will be described. This overview is for TSPs certified in the "Nutrient Management-Organic and Inorganic" category but not certified in the separate "CNMP Plan Develoment-Nutrient Management" category.  

 The Agricultural Fertilizer Research and Education Council (AFREC) will showcase several Minnesota research projects funded by the Agricultural Fertilizer Research and Education Council (AFREC) (2 CEU's in NM).  The afternoon program will take place from 1:00 PM - 2:00 PM and 2:30 - 3:30 PM on December 13th.

Ag Nutrient Challenges and Opportunities: 2:00 PM - 2:30 PM  Warren Formo, Executive Director of the Minnesota Ag Water Resource Center, will address the challenging, emerging environment within which modern production agriculture in Minnesota must successfully engage.

The Pesticide Applicator Recertification: Category H -- Seed Treatment Session, 2 PM - 3:30 PM: This MDA approved session is for applicators who need recertification credit in Category H. To receive Category H: Seed Treatment recertification must attend this December 13th  afternoon session and also the Category A: Core and Category C: Field Crop Pest Management pesticide recertification morning and afternoon sessions on December 14th.

The Minnesota Crop Production Retailer's annual meeting is scheduled to start at 4:30 PM on Tuesday, December 13th.

On Wednesday, December 14th, the program will continue with pesticide applicator recertification which will start at 8:00 AM for categories A (Core) and C (Field Crop Pest Management) and the Crop Pest Management Short Course. For applicators who need certification in Category A + H or Categories A + H + C, attend the Tuesday afternoon session as well as this workshop.

The CPM Short Course's General Session will start at 8:00 AM on Wednesday, December 14th with this year's theme "The New Normal's-Adapting to changes in Economics, Climate and Pest Genetics". Dr's. David Asbridge, Mark Seeley and Bruce Hibbard will present and discuss recent changes in demand and prices for grain crops and fertilizer, weather and climate trends impacting Minnesota agriculture, and the rapid changes in the development of crop pest resistance such as corn rootworms when deploying transgenic insect resistance technology. The concurrent sessions on Wednesday afternoon will focus on emerging corn and soybean insect & disease issues, corn nematodes, management of white mold in soybeans, wheat management, new technology for spray drift control, strategies for increasing corn yields, changes in soybean phid management and managing soybean inputs.

The concurrent sessions at the CPM short course continues on Thursday, December 15th starting at 8:00 AM with a wealth of pest, crop, and fertilizer management topics including; phosphorus and potassium recommendations, sulfur deficiencies, overview of the new University of Minnesota crop nutient website,  managing corn for extreme conditions, managing soybean trait options, variable-rate corn seeding, interpreting and managing multiple-years of yield maps, weed management options for glyphoste resistant weeds, new nitrification inhibitors, Minnesota drainage case studies and emerging strategies for subsurface field drainage. The program will end Thursday afternoon at 2:20 pm to allow for a timely return home.

All concurrent sessions will run for 50 minutes and offer 1.0 CCA CEU/topic. Certified crop advisors will be able to collect a total of 15 CCA continuing education credits over the course of the 3-day program.
