Sauk Centre Hay Auction Report Jan. 19, 2012

I am posting three items based on information from the January 19 Hay Auction at Sauk Centre:

Jan 19 2012 SC Hay Auction.pdf... A list of all tested hay lots and bedding materials sold... grouped by kind of hay, RFV in 25 point groups, and type of bale ... cost per pound of dry matter and cost per point RFV are calculated.

History of Selected Lots 2011 2012.pdf ... Average and Range of RFV values and prices for Medium Square Alfalfa in 25 RFV groups from 101 to 200 RFV. This included the average through each of the last 4 years and each auction so far this year. Medium Square Straw also listed.

Graph SC Hay Auction 2001-2012.pdf .... Line graphs fro markets fo Medium Square Alfalfa by 25 RFV groups. This year's line is a bold gold line. Dotted lines indicate and in-between sale did not hay hay in this group.

Hay auctions continue to be a good place for buyers and sellers to connect. Newspaper and shopper advertising still works. Some people are using Craig's List and other tools.

 

REGIONAL FORAGE WORKSHOP REMINDER - Topics listed below

I heard Richard Muck, from the USDA Forage Research Center talk about "Making Great Silage" at the Midwest Forage Symposium in Wisconsin last week. I think that people can get a return on their registration fee at Rochester, Greenwald and Lamberton from Rich's discussion on silages and participating in some discussion with him related to their own experience and interests.

And from what I have seen of Mike Russelle, those who attend at Cromwell will have a good opportunity as well.  

These 4 Regional Forage Workshop: "Tour de Forage" are conducted in cooperation with the Midwest Forage Association, local forage councils, agribusiness sponsors, and U of M Extension staff.

Featured Speaker at the NE site will be Michael Russelle, USDA Dairy Forage Research Center stationed at St. Paul, on the topic "Cycling & Loss of Nutrients in Pasture: There's No Substitute for Good Management"
