This year's conference was held in Mankato at the Verizon Wireless center and attended by 115 volunteers and instructors.  Participants attended sessions on topics ranging from "leave No Trace", to wild edibles, and odonata research.  Field trips were to  a local prairie and tree restoration, the city of New Ulm, and Minneopa State Park.  Illuminating the conference theme - "Explore", the keynote this year was Greg Petry, kayaker who paddled around Lake Superior. In the words of one participant, "Thanks for your time, energy and effort in putting on the conference this weekend.  I give it two thumbs up!  The program was strong, presenters were great and the food and arrangements were high quality."</p>

        <![CDATA[<p><strong>Congratulations</strong> to the Year 3 group of Adult Leaders and staff, who will complete training this this afternoon at the <a href="http://www.lter.umn.edu/">Cedar Creek Ecosystem Science Reserve</a>. Over the weekend, the adult leaders have been immersed in learning about citizen science data, conducting scientific investigations, and facilitating inquiry learning with youth. During the coming summer, these leaders will work with teams of youth to collect citizen science data, and conduct science investigations. Some of these leaders will carry the project outside of Minnesota for the first time.</p>

This National Science Foundation funded project seeks to expand the reach of Citizen Science for middle-school youth. Typically, citizen science--or public involvement science--involves the general public in collecting data that can be analyzed and interpreted by professional scientists. This project will carry citizen science a step further, enabling youth to design, carry out, and even report on their own research questions under the mentorship of science advisors at the University of Minnesota. By giving them the freedom and responsibility to design their own projects the students will gain a greater understanding and appreciation for science, and will grow to see themselves as scientists.</p>]]>

The presentation "Connecting Scientists and Adult Leaders through Technology to Further Authentic Science Inquiry by Youth" will share the results of a recent study exploring the preferences of potential adult leaders towards the use of internet technologies to support connections with professional scientists and facilitate authentic scientific inquiry among middle-school aged youth engaged in citizen science research.  Using the University of Minnesota Extension <em>Driven to Discover: Authentic Inquiry through Citizen Science</em> as context for the study, Shimek interviewed licensed teachers, informal science educators, and youth development leaders to answer the research questions: <br />
<ol><br />
	<li>How do adult leaders describe the potential for using web-based technology as a means to achieve the scientist contribution to youth-based authentic science inquiry?</li><br />
	<li>How do adult leaders perceive plans to develop a website to facilitate the ongoing relationship of scientists, adult leaders, and youth? What do they perceive as needs and barriers for using this planned website?  What website characteristics would encourage them to use this planned website?</li><br />

The festival culminates a curriculum that interweaves cultural and science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) lessons.</p>

<p>Snow snakes, called goonginebigoog in Ojibwe, is an Native American game that was once popular in upper-Midwestern tribes. Students grades four through eight from Naytahwaush Charter School, Pine Point and the Circle of Life Academy worked around ten hours to gather, shape, paint and wax their snakes - long, thick sticks. At the festival, they then competed in games for distance (which snakes travel furthest on a plowed snow path), and accuracy (who can toss the snake through a rolling hoop). </p>

Your organization can offer these 40-hour courses by sending a staff member to the Instructor Training course.</p>

<p>A few seats are left in our <a href="http://www.minnesotamasternaturalist.org/courses/register/?courseId=242">February 9-10 Instructor Training</a> in Minneapolis. You must have a letter of support from your agency or organization and pay 75.00 to participate in the training. If you conduct a training of your own within one year, you will receive a refund of the 75.00. Students are asked to bring their own laptops and LCD projectors if they have one. The focus of the training is to teach you to use the materials prepared by the Master Naturalist program, not content. We ask that potential instructors have a degree or experience in a related field. Lunch and snacks are provided. It is one of the resources that Extension staff will consult in developing and evaluating Environmental Science Education programming.</p>

<p>Whether working with passionate volunteers or natural resource professionals, one of the chief aims of University of Minnesota Extension <a href="http://www.extension.umn.edu/EnvironEd/">Environmental Science Education</a> programming is to improve environmental literacy. What exactly do we mean? Environmental literacy is a complex set of values, knowledge, and skills that enable individuals to act intentionally toward the environment. But resources like the new framework help us improve our aims, and impact.</p>

<p>A series of <a href="http://www.seek.state.mn.us/eemn_b.cfm">report cards on environmental literacy</a> have consistently suggested that Minnesotans score above average on a general assessment of their literacy. But we have significant room for improvement. Improvements in environmental literacy can subsequently better prepare us to effectively tackle natural resource issues. </p>]]>

        <![CDATA[<p>Three new articles in the October 2011 issue of the <a href="http://www.joe.org/">Journal of Extension</a> focus on the effective design and assessment of Extension master volunteer programs: </p>

<p>In <a href="http://www.joe.org/joe/2011october/rb1.php">Reasons for Volunteering as a Mississippi Master Gardener</a>, authors, Wilson and Newman, summarize a survey of 400+ volunteers. Their results suggest that these participants volunteer to learn more about horticulture, and help those in need. They are less inclined to volunteer for ego-driven or career-related reasons. </p>

<p>In <a href="http://www.joe.org/joe/2011october/rb2.php">Assessment and Evaluation of the Utah Master Naturalist Program: Implications for Targeting Audiences</a>, author, Larese-Casanova, summarizes a study of the differential outcomes of a watersheds training model for professional and amateur naturalists. His results suggest that amateur participants consistently learned more and more positively rated the course than their professional counterparts. In the words of the author: "Demographic, assessment, and evaluation data were each in their own way particularly useful in determining program success. However, by using these three data sets together, a greater understanding of the effectiveness of the program was achieved."</p>

<p>In <a href="http://www.joe.org/joe/2011october/rb3.php">Evaluating Peer Impacts of a Master Forest Owner Volunteer Program</a>, authors, Broussard Allred, Goff, Wetzel, and Luo, describe a study of participant and peer-to-peer outcomes of participation in an Extension volunteer program. Results suggest that participants were able to better manage their wooded property, promote community stewardship, and serve as leaders. Peer outcomes included information-seeking and goal-setting behavior, and changes in management activity. Authors conclude: "The results from the surveys demonstrate that local peer-to-peer programs can positively influence woodland owners in their communities as well empower the volunteers themselves."</p>

<p>These studies add to the rich base of research that informs the design, delivery, and evaluation of Extension master volunteer efforts. ESE programs like the <a href="http://www.minnesotamasternaturalist.org/">Minnesota Master Naturalist Program</a>, and <a href="http://www.extension.umn.edu/citizenscience/">Driven to Discover: Enabling Youth Inquiry Through Citizen Science </a>both draw from and contribute to this knowledge of how we can support and empower citizens for community leadership and stewardship.</p>]]>

        <![CDATA[<p>Members of the Environmental Science Team extend a warm welcome to Darren Lochner, Minnesota Master Naturalist Program Coordinator. Darren has recently joined a statewide team of regional and campus-based individuals focused on the <a href="http://www.minnesotamasternaturalist.org/">Minnesota Master Naturalist Program</a>, which is a joint endeavor of the University of Minnesota Extension and the State of Minnesota Department of Natural Resources.</p>

<p>Darren will be working closely with a team from the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources and Extension to develop a new program under the Minnesota Master Naturalist umbrella: Master Naturalist Explorers. This new program will pair current adult Minnesota Master Naturalist Volunteers with staff in existing after-school programs to offer fun, outdoor, science-based educational opportunities for 4th and 5th graders to learn about the ecology and natural history of their schoolyard, neighborhood, nearby natural areas, and the entire state.</p>

<p>Master Naturalist Explorers will address the problem that children are spending increasingly less time outside and, consequently, know less about their environment and world. It responds to the needs identified in Minnesota's 2009 Outdoor Education Legislative Report to increase outdoor learning opportunities for children and to train educators who are often uncomfortable taking youth outside for lessons. It also addresses outcomes outlined in the Minnesota Greenprint to provide increased environmental education opportunities for youth both at school and during play.</p>

<p>The goals of the project are 1) to create a series of outdoor, sequential, earth and life science-based lessons with targeted learning outcomes that address the new MN K-12 Science Standards, 2) to prepare adult volunteers to deliver these lessons in after-school programs for 4th and 5th graders with the aim of improving their performance on the 5th grade Science MCA exams and 3) to establish a permanent program to offer these lessons throughout Minnesota. The weekly lessons will focus on the physical changes in the seasons and their effects on plant and animal life i.e. phenology. These lessons will be divided into three units linked to The Minnesota Weatherguide, a natural history calendar.</p>

<p>Project team members from Environmental Science Education and Youth Development hosted the 2011 Annual Research Summit last weekend. On the first evening of the event, participants enjoyed new science activities with their fellow youth, leaders, and professional University of Minnesota Scientists. They chose from exploring the outdoors on a night hike, dissecting owl pellets, hanging camera traps, designing/testing roller-coaster-like tracks for ball bearings. <p>On day 2, participant youth had a chance to present poster summaries of their summer inquiry projects for a group of scientists, their adult leaders, and other natural resource volunteers. Youth worked closely with members of their research teams and professional scientists to plan and conduct their investigations over the summer. Individuals or teams of youth then spent the last few weeks creating their displays. In groups of four or five, they took turns at the Summit describing their study questions, methods, results and conclusions for young colleagues and professional judges. Akin to professional conferences, youth asked questions of each other, shared ideas, and compliments. </p>

<p>Some young participants described advantageous studies in their poster presentations. In his research project, for instance, one boy sampled more Monarch butterflies for a common disease than any other location in MN, but the University of Minnesota. One young girl counted color bands in each millimeter of length for many Monarch caterpillars as part of her study. </p>

<p>For many youth, this presentation was a practice run for their science fair or similar project later in the year. Some 4-H participants displayed their posters at a county fair. Most of these posters and presentations were well-crafted, polished, and practice.   </p>

        <![CDATA[<p>Driven to Discover: Enabling Youth Inquiry Through Citizen Science is a National Science Foundation funded program that involves middle school youth in asking scientific questions, designing and conducting their own research, and improving their understanding of science through participation in citizen science. </p>

<p>Today, the 2011 Annual Research Summit started with loads of science fun for participant youth. At the end of the research season, we invite all participating youth and their adult leaders to an overnight summit. On the first evening, they learn, teach and enjoy new science activities with their fellow youth, leaders, and professional University of Minnesota Scientists. Youth can choose from exploring the outdoors on a night hike, dissecting owl pellets, hanging camera traps, designing/testing roller-coaster-like tracks for ball bearings. Throughout the evening, activities engage youth in conversing and growing comfortable, collegial with science professionals and unfamiliar youth. </p>

<p>On day 2, the participant youth will dine with scientists, and explore the outdoors in more depth. They will also have a chance to present poster summaries of their summer inquiry projects for a group of scientists, their adult leaders and other natural resource volunteers. For many of these youth, this presentation is a practice run for their science fair or similar project later in the year.</p>
