July 2011 Archives

Held each spring and taught by Hennepin County Master Gardeners volunteers, the Urban Gardener series covers soils, planning a garden, maintaining a garden, how to grow vegetables and even demonstrates planting techniques! This year's cold weather forced all 2011 demonstrations to be held inside, but the ever creative master gardener volunteers brought the garden indoors for their demonstrations. In 2011, the program expanded to 3 locations in 2011, with classes being held at the Glendale Townhomes, Heritage Park housing and Sabathani Community Center, all in Minneapolis.

Young gardeners exploring the Display and Trial Gardens at the U.

This summer, a group UMN Extension Master Gardeners from the metro have been teaching youth gardening classes in the Display and Trial Garden on the St. Paul campus of the U of M. This will be the second summer that the Master Gardener Program has paired up with the Department of Rec Sports to host "the Green Scene," a weekly garden class for nine to twelve year-olds attending the annual Gopher Adventures summer camp. Each week the Master Gardeners cover a different gardening topic, from soil to vegetables to perennials. The Master Gardeners' role is to create the curriculum, and to teach the youth new gardening skills in their very own plot of land in the west end of the garden. They hope to inspire a love of all things horticulture in a new generation of gardeners.

Thank you very much to the Master Gardeners for all of your hard work!
