There are two positions as Student Lab Technicians open in the College of Food, Agricultural and Natural Resource Sciences for students to work part-time, a minimum of 10 hours/week.
The successful student applicant will have background and interests in two or more of these areas: plant science, biology, microbiology, plant pathology, agronomy, horticulture, or mycology. Previous experience in a lab, working with plants, or working with fungi while preferred is not required. Experience can be on the job or in the classroom. Being dependable, meticulous and organized are desirable qualities, as are good communication skills and the ability to manage time. Interested applicants should have two 4 hour blocks of time available for work each week.
The student worker will assist with greenhouse and laboratory research on the biology and management of plant pathogens and fungal plant diseases. Work may include planting, sampling, evaluating, and tending of plants in greenhouses, growth chambers and field plots; preparation of chemical solutions; aseptic culture and incubation of fungal plant pathogens; data entry using Excel; preparation of microbiological media; grinding plant samples; DNA isolation from plant and fungal samples; general lab maintenance and other duties as assigned.
