Y-Buddies is a student run volunteer program through the University YMCA. They match college students with 3rd through 8th grade children from Minneapolis schools who could benefit from a positive role model in their life. They require one hour per week to be spent with the "Little Buddy," and we have low/no-cost Big Group Events once a month, on a weekend day. In the past they have gone rollerskating, to the Science Museum, and the Holidazzle Parade to name a few. Many staff members and participants have cars, and the bus system is a great resource, so transportation for these events should not be a concern. To supplement and reflect on the mentoring experience, they also have a seminar on Tuesday evenings from 7:00-9:00pm where they discuss community awareness issues that affect the families and children they work with (we try to keep them upbeat, so don't think seminar=lecture!). They are now also offering one credit for the year (.5 per semester) to anyone who is interested. It sounds like a big commitment, and it is, but time-wise it ends up being only about 4 hours per week. Y-Buddies is a great way to connect with other students, gain leadership experience, and make a lasting impression on a child's life!
They would love for you to fill out an application and accept applications throughout the year, but seminars are starting on Tuesday, October 12th, so get your application in ASAP! Once they receive the application, they will call you to set up a short interview.
