SECIA (Southeast Como Improvement Association & the Como Green Village) is seeking immediate volunteers for a design competition
SECIA is assembling a volunteer design team on short order for a Como Green Village project. Architecture, design and horticulture students or recent grads are needed. This project will be done and submitted with much of spring term still ahead. An estimation of about 30 hours of work involved for each position including our meetings. See the postings below.
An individual with:
- architectural training or model-building skills
- graphic design skills
- horticulture training and/or gardening experience
is needed for volunteer assistance with a short-term project. You can be a student or already graduated; it is preferred if you are available for a couple hours on Fridays starting January 20 or 27 through the end of February in order to meet with the rest of the team. Project deadline is February 26, 2012.
The Como Green Village is focused on environmental sustainability within the Southeast Como neighborhood, which is located directly north of the University of Minnesota Minneapolis campus. One project recently completed was GrowBarrels - a self-watering container garden. Last summer, nearly sixty residents were able to build their own GrowBarrel for free at community workshops. This year, the Como Green Village is submitting the GrowBarrel design to the Permaculture Research Institute Cycling Re-Sources design competition. For this, there is a need to build a scale model of the container gardening system, which will be the architect's (or other individual experienced in modeling) responsibility. While this position will not provide monetary compensation, you will have the opportunity to gain experience working with a team, finding creative solutions within a limited budget and time frame, and learn about urban sustainability!
