i have not had time to look up these answers... will do so before tommorrow at 3:15. Charles sounded like he was on the right path. see you then.
bob
Yes, I will meet at 3:15 tomarrow at our room.
However, what did we agree on for number 10?
I won't be coming to class tommorrow, because I have to go to chicago, I already told this to judy, So I will see you all on thursday!!
good night
Charles
anyone want to go to class 45 minutes early to go through some thoughts... i am getting pretty tired. and will have a lot more time tommorrow.
here are the for-sures i know.
1. T
4. T (i hope someone will confirm that)
5. F (per article- someone should look that over too)
6, C
7. C
9. we are on our own
Although I could be wrong on 3. I am looking at the syllabus.
Delta Phi Epsoln and NBEA and other are broad-based organizations. Most business ed organizations are broad based. At least this is what I think.
yeah- it might help to have the names of the specific organizations... do you have any of the tech or marketing ones??
I found the evidence when I was searching for the answers to number ten. I think it goes both ways. There are specific organizations for marketing and technology, and there are the big ones that seem to include everybody
lets go with C for both 6 & 7. Charles, where did you get evidence for question #3??
Yes I was thinking appliation by the nature of the question.
i am feeling application...
if you read the masterful and skilled part of it, it seems to align with knowing the effects of debits and credits on different types of accounts
This format does sound like an application, I know it is not D,E, Or F because they seem to be more of "what do you think" and Explanation is too detailed for the point scale (I think). So either B or C
this is a toss up... it is hard to argue against Application... but all the other answers sound good too!
i dont think so... but here is the format
Componnent Excelent Standard Poor
title 5 points 3 points 1 point
body 5 points 3 points 1 point
reference list 5 points 3 points 1 point
(with a brief description for each point.)
for #6 would it be application?? because in different accouts credit and debits will do different things?
Is the rubric for number 4 on webct?
Wiggins and McTighe is an article she handed out titled Understanding by Design
I do not have the book so I cannot help on 6 or 4. Sorry, I will work on the other questions.
i am "a go" on #7 being C.... how about #6- do you know where the Mctigque article is???
I am quite certain 7 is C. Bloom says procedural is criteria used to determine when tp apply a procedure to use a particular method or law. This is in the handout under knowledge dimensions. Correct me if I am wrong?
ok- we all agree on evaluate...what do we think about the knowledge dimension??? i am thinking procedural more than conceptual. or answer C- but i am listening.
7. may be C because you are using a investment skill in a procedural way and have knowledge of criteria for dertermining a decison. YOu may be right on C. for 7. We know for sure it is evaluating.
I looked at the website...however I still think by Bloom definiton points to evaluate. Look at the question!!! It says the word "Critque" in the question. This is a gimme.
you are right. i was looking at the web model she gave us on the course site. this handout is much better. what are you thinking for the answer?
http://www.udel.edu/inst/june99/bloom2/tsld009.htm
is critiqueing and example of evaluating? look at this link on Bloom's taxonomy...
Techniques is published by the association for career and techincal education, to find it google, techniques acte and it will come up.
If you look at Bloom handout. Number 7 appears to be E because conceptual knowledge states on the taxonomy table: knowledge of principles and generalizations, knowledge of theories, models and structures. Lastly evaluating by the Bloom model is making judgement based on criteria and standards. Hence I think they are using their knowledge of theories and investment priciples (conceptual) to make judgements on the situation (evaluation). The answer is E.
i know The Balance Sheet is published by a business textbook publisher...could not find Techniques
Are balance sheets and techniques textbook information?
does techniques and balance sheet a business textbook?
i think it is B or C... but am not sure whether it is analyzing or evaluating in the cognitive process. Bloom does not have conceptual knowlecge or factual knowledge in the model.
If a professional org. is the publisher of a journal but is charging everyone, for profit does that make it a private commerical publisher?
for 10,
Business education Forum is published by NBEA which is a nat'l professional organization
Journal of Applied Research...is published by Delta Pi Epsilon which is a nat'l prof organization
along with a few of the others...how are you distinguishing between a private commercial publisher and a nat'l prof org?
#1 I believe is true.
2. I have on idea
3. I believe is false because Marketing has its own professional organizations, so does Technology, But the bigger organizations seem to include everyone, like Delta pi epislon.
4. I didn't buy the stitt-gohdes book
5. I can't find the resnick article, not even on the web!!!
6.need book
7.still working on
8. there is no 8!!
9. we can talk about later
10. ECAED_EDDDDE
judy emailed the class clarifying refereed vs non-refereed...
refereed equals a panel of peer reviewers that reviews manuscripts from which the author's names have been removed
non-refereed equals journals in which articles are solicited by the editor's from experts...
basically, if you type the name of the journal in yahoo with the word refereed...you can figure it out. i have that part figured out for most of them...it's just the nat'l professional org vs private commercial publisher i am struggling with
Jen how are you distinushiing those from refeered and non refeered?
this quiz is much harder than the last one.
For instance what does non-refereed or refereed mean for publishers?
#5- FALSE--This is a section from the article.
Generalized learning in school versus situation-specific competencies outside. Part of the reason for this isolation may be that schools aim to teach general, widely usable skills and theoretical principles. That is their raison d'etre. Indeed, the major justification offered for formal instruction is – usually - its generality and power of transfer. Yet to be truly skillful outside school, people must develop situation-specific forms of competence. As we have seen - even in arithmetic, a curriculum whose usefulness is seldom questioned - the packages of knowledge and skill that schools provide seem unlikely to map directly onto the clusters of knowledge people will use in their work or personal lives. This seems true even for highly technical professional training. For example, one study (Lesgold et al., in press) has demonstrated that expert radiologists interpret X-rays using mental processes different from those taught in medical courses, textbooks, and even hospital teaching rounds. Another (Morris & Rouse, 1985) has shown that extensive training in electronics and troubleshooting theories provides very little knowledge and fewer skills directly applicable to performing electronic troubleshooting. Growing evidence of this kind points to the possibility that very little can be transported directly from school to out-of-school use. Both the structure of the knowledge used and the social conditions of its use may be more fundamentally mismatched than we previously thought.
On the other hand, situation-specific learning by itself is very limiting. As already noted, extensive studies of individuals with little formal schooling show how people can effectively perform work that includes extensive mathematical calculation. Some of these studies also document the limits of highly situated skills acquired in the workplace. Several demonstrate that when familiar aspects of a task change in certain ways - for example, when construction foremen are asked to work with scales not used in their culture (Carraher, 1986), or when bookies are asked to accept bets that cannot be calculated from their tables (Schliemann & Acioly, in press) - unschooled individuals have considerable difficulty and may fail entirely. Schooled people do better, although they rarely use the supposedly general algorithms
hey everyone! time for another quiz discussion. i am here. I am slowly making my way through the questions.
#1 looks to be a certain true...i found this source on webct--- about career outlooks.
#2 looks pretty tricky and could go either way depending on how you argue it. evidence for false would be that they all show SPECIFIC STANDARDS that bring develop assessments and activities.
#3 still looking for evidence of false.
#4 True as seen by the examples on webct.
#5 anyone know where this article is???
THe dowloadable files are the new Philosophy statement, the School information and the courses that are offered. I'm also having a little trouble coming up with the program goals, I'm not sure what they are suppose to look like.
Charles
I started putting together the assessment and before I get any further on it, I wanted some of your ideas so that we all have some input on it.
Thanks!

See everyone tomarrow. Glad to see this form of communication worked.
Chow,
Dave
sounds like a plan...i will let you all know what i hear back. good night
I know every lab on the St. Paul campus so maybe I will go early to class and check if any of these labs have inspiration.
-Dave
So we do not have answers to questions 2 and 7 yet, right? We are sending e-mails out to find the answers to these questions right? So who so ever hears back will let all of us know right? Just clairifying what is going to happen if we do not know 2 and 7.
-Thanks
Dave
Yep...I asked them about 2 and 7. If I hear back, I will post an entry to our blog titled Advice from Casi's Group. I will check it first thing tomorrow morning, and then again around 2 (after work!)
I am going to call it quits for tonight!
Thanks guys!
i dont mind it either...are we still hanging around tommorrow night after class? does anyone know where we can get access to a program for the flow chart and concept map?
True and this is better than opening 500 hundred e-mails to see the answers to the questions. And then having to delete those 500 hundred e-mails.
this is better than a drive to campus even though it takes longer
So have everyone been getting used to communicating this way for longer discusssions?
Do you like/dislike?
i will email tom from the other group- and send an email to you guys with his reply...probably not until tommorrow.
then we will have all 3 out of four groups covered...
So are we asking about Question 2 and 7 to Casi's group?
Right Jen?
We maybe could send out a list serve and take Judy off the list so she would not know we are sending back and forth to the whole class.
-Dave
I already put an email out to Chris in Casi's group...does anyone else have someone they would feel comfortable asking?
So are we choosing D for question 7?We do not have to jusitfy.
Everyone?
i am all for D now...jumping on the bandwagon. (any chance we can consult with an outside group??)
Are A and C the same type of answer for question 7. Does A bring the result of C?
Good point Jen!! I think that D does make a little more sense
Bob, That is a good point on question 7
the rest of them go hand in hand.
So question 7 is once agian up in the air but leaning towards D.
Who agrees?
i really have no idea...
as far as 7, i remember Judy saying that the name was changed to encourage more males to enroll, because secretarial was a female stereotype. so that is for sure a MAJOR FACTOR.
we just need to narrow it down to find the one that is NOT a MAJOR factor...
the reason i think it might be D is because it says a "desire to move away from employment prep", and i didn't think that was ever a goal of business ed
ok C is what I orginally had for 7 and it sounds good. We do not have to justify the multiple choice. So QUESTION 7 IS C. Does everyone agree?
Now we only have question 2 (a.k.a trick question) left?
Anyone have ideas or remember anything from class?
What in the world do they mean by articulation in educaiton?
I always thought this meant to clarify, right?
i am leaning towards D for question 7 more now. Answers B,C & E go hand in hand and A is hard to argue with.
#2 I have no idea about it seems like a trick, and as far as 7 goes I would guess C, but I have no reason for the guess or than why try to change if it keeps students in the class?
Yes I agree with Charles on Business Ed from page 3 of the Hosler article. I had the mindset of only secondary but the question does not specify that. So QUESTION 4 IS TRUE.
QUESTIONS LEFT...
2.
7.
right?
i would probably agree that question 4 is true...i have yet to see evidence other than the courses of bookeeping and handwriting in the three articles i have read.
Yes, I will admit my spelling is lacking without spell check but it must be due to my composition being in at a 12th grade reading level?? ha ha
something seems weird about question 2...it seems to easy to just be true.
in the hosler article turn to page 3 judy already has the answer underlined so 4 is true
So we only have
2.
4.
7.
left for questions right?
I agreee with Charles on Queston 6 being FALSE. They say you should have this but does not distingush between general bus and personal use.
How about everyone else?
I thind 6 is false...
Look at page 52 in the PCBEE
"State teacher certification agenices shoulod include related business work experience as a requirement for the certification of ALL business teachers...
Yeah sorry I missed that one. to clarify policy statement 37 states you are correct. QUESTION 3 is for sure true
Only four left
2.
4.
6.
7.
I am confident question 8 is keyboarding because I believe she is saying available today. Am i right?
According to policy statement 41 #6 would be false because it does not differ between general business and business for skills for personal use. It just say they all should attain it
Ok then...
Then we need only five questions left to agree on with solid proof
2.
3.
4.
6.
7.
Am I right?
dave- are you still debating question 3?? i think this is a for sure true.
for question 8 in the Hall article ( as you can see I read this article just because we have the same last name) page 4 he says "many elementary and middle schools around the country have been involved for years in the economic education movement then he talks about the same students learning keyboarding. Are we to guess or figure out what a traditional businss ed. content is???
Sorry I meant to write FALSE for question 5.
NO thats cool it is kind of strange that you have to hit new entry for every post.
I had trouble with this at first too.
But hey it is better than sending 50 e-mails back and forth and opening old e-mails to see what we once said the answers were.
Here are the answers I think we are solid about with no doubts:
correct me if I am wrong?
1. True
5. True
8. E
9. E
10. C
Dave- i think 5 is false...see charles' post below.
Using this blog thing is taking some getting use to for me so excuse me if I reply a little late.
Charles
I am just checking to make sure everyone is here???
-Dave
I am here
--bob
I cannot find in policy statement 41 where it says except for those teachers who specilize in gereral business ed or personal use. I do see where it asks for high qualiy relevant work experience but not excluding generial business teachers or personal use. Hence I may say FALSE.
Looks like #7 is a question mark? i do not know where to find proof that it is C...
what other questions are still in debate?
i am still confused about question 4!? how early is she talking...Mary Margaret Hosler says that the English Poor Law of 1601 encouraged an apprenticeship system adopted by the colonists
Policy Statement 37 also shows us a list of classes to be included and leaves out C) Business human Resources Issues.
bob
Hard to argue with Policy Statement 37 and Charles---i am changing my answer to true.
i agree and am changing my answer too! jen
Question 4 this one could really go either way...Bartholome and Meggison both show how these classes were offered- but rarely and privately. I guess that true could be the answer because they were offered in some form of education...even if they were at a private school and required time away from the other subjects.
Hello everybody this is Charles: Here are my answers:
1. True according to the hall article in the readings.
2. I don't have an answer for yet but I think it is true just can't find proof yet.
3.true check policy statement #37
4. True, found in the mary margaret hosler article
5. False, On page vii, in the standards book it states that "To ensure students...are afforded equal access to fundamental business knowledge and skills and therefore an equal opportunity for success in life.
6. True, policy statement #41
7.not sure about
8. I'm not sure I know it is either D or E, Economics use to be taught, but now I think it is keyboarding.
9.E
10.C
Question 4 is a hard one because I think the first part of the question is false but the second part is true about what was offered.
Everyone I am here. Lets talk about the Quiz. Bob click on download file under the Progress Report Headline under your last post. Look down on the page. This is just like a message board.
We should say what we think the answers are for each question and if we have differences then talk more about why. Also where we found the answers to the false questions. This sound good.
-Dave
Dave, are you there? Just Checking- that sounds like a good idea on the answers for the quiz.
BELOW ARE THE QUESTION AND ANSWERS I HAVE ALREADY- I AM STILL LOOKING INTO THE ONES WITHOUT ANSWERS...(BOB)
Question #1:
I was thinking this was true because of the word GENERALLY. (Bob)
Question #2:
Question #3:
False- nowhere does it say these should be acceptable for graduation. Although it does say that ALL students should have a course and that these should become part of the general education of ALL students. This could go either way--what do you guys think?? See Policy Statement #1, 23, 47.(Bob)
Question #4:
Question #5:
Question #6:
I was thinking that this would be false. Nowhere that i found, yet, in the PCBEE does it say that teachers SHOULD obtain work experience. (Bob)
Question #7
C- but i was unsure if that was the main reason. (Bob)
Question #8
E-this seems pretty straightforward. (Bob)
Question #9
Question #10
Hey group...this seems a little confusing to me- i see the link to the progress report- but do not see anything there??? are you sure this is easier than web ct? let me know how to see the link that you posted.
also lets talk quiz too!
Above is the link to our first progress report. July 1, 2004
