Prospectives Weekend

This post is a test run for the new GSO blog. I’m hoping that this will prove to be a more user-friendly forum in which English graduate students can share resources/ideas and organize activities…but more on that in a future post. The department has asked for volunteers from the GSO to house visiting students and to coordinate some activities for our recruitment weekend, which will run from Wednesday, March 26th to Saturday, March 29th. Here are the most pressing concerns:

1.) We need volunteers to house visiting students during that 3-4 day period. If you have an extra room, couch and/or lush carpet and you are willing to have a houseguest, please email me or post a note in the comment section of this blog (please be sure to include your email and first name).

2.) We also need a volunteer to host a visiting student who will be arriving on Monday, March 10th.

3.) At least two individuals are needed to help coordinate both housing assignments and a van tour of the Twin Cities. Volunteers can work with Lois and our colleague Na Rae to help arrange pickups and drop-offs for that weekend.

4.) The department has asked that a few graduate students allow prospectives to observe the courses they are teaching so they can get a sense of what U of M undergrads are like.

5.) There will be a bagel breakfast and information session on Friday morning. We would like to have some graduate students volunteer to attend and schmooze with our guests.

Lois has asked that I get back to her with some names by the first week in March, so if you know you will be available for volunteering in any capacity, please email me as soon as possible at cole0384@umn.edu. Again, feel free to use the comment section of the blog to volunteer or offer any other suggestions you might have.

Best,

Do any of you participate in Graduate Symposium in Romance Studies 3/29 (Sat)and willing to take prospectives who are leaving late to the symposium?
And, thanks Laura for offering Kim Trinh (3/10 person) to visit your class. But she's visiting Jo Lee's class at that time, and she's hoping to work with Jo so... Do you still think you can get her from the airport? She's arriving 3/10 at 12:20PM. I told her how to get here via lightrail so if you're busy, don't feel pressured!

I'd be more than happy to have someone observe my class (3:30 to 4:20) MWF or help in any other way. I have been told though, that there is no way I can put anyone up in my apt.

Are any of your homeless/classless prospectives MFAs? If yes, and they're interested in seeing a creative writing class, they're welcome to visit my Intermed Poetry Writing class Tuesday night 530-8. And I may be able to house someone in later March (floor only, I'm afraid, but they'd get their own bathroom!).

I'll join Kevin at the bagel breakfast on Friday morning, and I'll be as charming as possible before noon.

I can host the student coming in on March 10. I have class in the morning and at night that day, so depending on that person's arrival, I may be able to meet them at the airport.

Kris and I are happy to host prospectives at our place on whatever date is convenient. People are also welcome to visit my class (Modern Fiction), but it does meet at 8:00am, MW.

i will be at the bagel breakfast; all are welcome in my TA section (of Brit Lit 2), thursday @ 1220.

Lars and I'd be happy to host a student of either gender from 3/26 to 3/29. We have an extra bedroom and live about three busable miles from campus.

Coleman: The March 10th person can visit my class if they want--Tuesday/Thursday 12:20--2:15. I could also probably get them from the airport.
During the real weekend I will be at a conference.
