EPASA has been an exciting organization lately. I would like to share some of our recent accomplishments.

Board Retreat

Ingo Stolz planned a retreat earlier this fall for the EPASA board. We spent a Saturday together, enjoying breakfast at Hard Times, visiting Fort Snelling, and planning the future of EPASA. It would be impossible to summarize here the multitude of topics discussed, but we did decide (in a discussion inspired by Alex Cleberg) that:

The EPASA mission is to enhance the academic and social experience of EdPA students and to foster relationships within the EdPA Community.

Thank you, Ingo, for planning this productive and energizing retreat.

Halloween Party

Christine Parcells, Chris Churma, and Leah Hakkola organized a Halloween party at Dr. Hendel's house last Saturday. Over 30 members of EdPA attended this swank event, funded in part through a GAPSA social grant. Guests included two nuns, Chiquita Banana, a rare Spiderman-ninja hybrid, and many came dressed as graduate students. We hope everyone had a wonderful time.

Thank you, Christine, Chris, and Leah, for planning such an exciting event. We are indebted furthermore to Dr. Hendel for allowing us to hold this party at his lovely home.

Information Sessions

Yi Cao and I arranged two information sessions this month for EdPA students to meet some of our newest faculty members. Peter Demerath, Rebecca Ropers-Huilman, Frances Vavrus, and David Weerts spoke about their current research, answered questions, and shared career advice with over 30 interested EdPA students.

We would like to thank these faculty members for graciously accepting our invitations. Thank you also to Yi, for conceiving of and implementing this wonderful idea.

Online Presence

Bill Marshall created an EPASA Facebook group recently. There are currently over 25 members and almost 30 photos from the Halloween party (thanks in large part to the photography of Somongkol Teng). Please join our EPASA group!

Thank you, Bill, for these efforts to enhance both the online presence and social interconnectedness of EPASA and EdPA.

Looking Forward

There are a number of projects underway.

We have decided to offer grants for initiatives aimed at fulfilling the mission of EPASA. Raya Hegeman will oversee this project. More information on this opportunity is forthcoming.

Diana Yefanova is exploring the possibility of a new wiki-based website for EPASA. This would allow us to collaboratively maintain our site, making it a reliable source of up-to-date information to better reflect our vibrant community.

Alex Cleberg is currently investigating the possibility of holding information sessions featuring successful EdPA alumni interested in speaking about their careers.

We hope you find these initiatives exciting! Please let us know if there are other ideas we should consider.

Upcoming Events

To further our mission of fostering relationships within the EdPA community, EPASA will begin holding a happy hour gathering every month. The first will be at the Kitty Cat Klub on Friday, November 21st, at 5:30pm. We hope to see you there!

Thank You

We sincerely appreciate the efforts of all members of EdPA who made these events a success.

Please note also that not a single accomplishment mentioned above would have been possible without the help and dedication of all EPASA board members.

Alexander Cleberg

Bill Marshall

Christine Parcells

Christopher Churma

Diana Yefanova

Leah Hakkola

Ingo Stolz

Matthew Walters

Raya Hegeman

Yi Cao

Thank you and we look forward to continuing to enhance the academic and social experience of EdPA students and to foster relationships within the EdPA Community.

Dear colleagues,
Thank you to those who have already volunteered to be a mentor for a new student this fall. We still need additional mentors, especially in the areas of Educational Administration and Evaluation Studies.

Please contact me at enger011@umn.edu if you are willing to serve as a mentor in the 2008-2009 academic year. You will be paired with a new student at the beginning of fall semester.

To aid me in pairing mentors and mentees, please provide the following information about yourself:
Name
Email address
Program track
Degree seeking (M.A., Ed.D., Ph.D., etc.)

Please respond by this Friday, August 15. If I do not have enough willing mentors at that time, I will not be able to offer the peer mentor program to new students.

Thank you for your help.

Sincerely,
Kathryn Enke
Graduate Student, Higher Education
