Research Participation

Request to Participate
You are being asked to take part in a survey that focuses on the experiences of doctoral students in counseling psychology and understand more about their interests and involvement with the Society of Counseling Psychology ([SCP]. This survey is a result of a project initiated by SCP 2012 Leadership Academy and is being conducted by Dr. Kimberly J. Langrehr, an assistant professor at the University of Missouri-Kansas City.

Background & Purpose of the Study

We would like to gain your perspectives about your experiences as a doctoral student in counseling psychology. The goal is to gain multiple perspectives of counseling psychology students that represent various social - cultural identities. Specifically, we are trying to understand the training experiences that encourage counseling psychology students to become interested and involved in SCP. To participate in this study, you are confirming that you are (a) currently enrolled in a doctoral training program in counseling psychology and (b) you are at least 18 years of age. We anticipate that at least 200 participants will complete the survey.

Procedures
If you choose to participate in this study, you will be directed to the on-line survey which asks you to think about the following issues: (a) the degree to which your training experiences have influenced your interest and involvement in SCP, (b) the degree to which your training program and it's faculty members have emphasized interest and involvement with SCP, (c) The degree to which you affiliate SCP. The survey is estimated to take approximately 15 minutes.

Risks and Inconveniences
This research is considered to be minimal risk and not expected to be more than the risks in your daily life. There are no other known risks to you if you choose to take part in this study.

Benefits
With the exception of reflecting upon your own experiences in doctoral training, there are no direct benefits to you for taking part in this study. Indirect benefits include contributing to research that will help address the needs of student members in SC in the future.

Fees and Expenses
There are no monetary costs to participants in this study

Compensation

If you complete the survey, you will be eligible to enter a raffle for one of eight electronic $25 gift cards to Amazon.com. After you have completed the survey, you will be given the option of whether or not you would like to participate in the raffle. If you choose to participate, you will be directed to a new web page that will ask you to enter an email address, where if randomly chosen, the gift card will be electronically mailed. Email addresses will be collected and stored separately from participant responses.

Alternatives to Study Participation
The alternative is not take part in the study.

Confidentiality
The researchers will make every effort to keep your survey responses confidential. There will be no information on the survey that will personally identify you and no way for your survey response can be linked to particular participants. Data will only be accessible to the researcher and research team and stored on UMKC's password protected network. Research Protections Program, and Federal regulatory agencies may look at records related to this study to make sure we are doing proper, safe research and protecting human subjects. accessible only by the researcher and research team. The results of this study may be published or presented to others. You will not be named in any reports of the results.

Voluntary Participation
Taking part in this research study is voluntary. If you choose to be in the study, you are free to stop participating at any time and for any reason. If you choose not to be in the study or decide to stop participating, your decision will not affect any care or benefits you are entitled to.

You have read this consent information or it has been read to you. You have been told why this research is being done and what will happen if you take part in the study, including the risks and benefits.
