A leader should display confidence, honesty, compassion, and communicate well with their team. I believe it is crucial for a leader to obtain the trust from their counterparts as well.

New Definition: Leadership is someone that is assertive and takes charge in a situation when necessary. They also guide their fellow co-workers or teammates in the "right" direction and help them grow as individuals by interacting with the entire group. A leader should display confidence, honesty, compassion, and communicate well with their team. I believe it is crucial for a leader to obtain the trust from their counterparts as well.

I altered my definition this week due to the articles that I read and after writing my second Leadership Journey paper I realized there were a couple of qualities and traits that I thought were very important. In the article, "How offline gatherings affect online communities: When virtual community members meet up" by Sessions (2010) they once again stress the importance of relationship building. I realized how influential this aspect was on my own leadership abilities. I pride myself on establishing relationships and this article brought in a new perspective on the subject. When analyzing my weaknesses I really wanted to include having an assertive personality somewhere into my definition. Taking charge in situations can establishes a leader's role in a company or organization and to their fellow employees as well.

I only changed my definition a little bit this week. I was particularly interested in the article written by Lomas called, "Ten leadership lessons from the Steve Jobs school of management." He discusses 10 things that need to be followed when wanting to conduct business like Steve Jobbs. I found one of his rules about communication and how it is important to cut to the chase. I would agree with this type of style especially when trying to communicate to their employees. By cutting to the chase his employees will know exactly what they need to do.

In this weeks definition I decided to include the importance of interacting with group members. This philosophy was referenced throughout Boyatzis's article (2006). On page 12 he discusses interaction as a complex, two part system and interaction as a group is an important part to effective leadership. I agreed with Boyatzis so I decided to mirror that in my definition this week and add that to what I had previously.

A leader should display confidence, honesty, compassion, and courage. I believe it is crucial for a leader to obtain the trust from their counterparts in order for them to be successful as a leader.

In this week's definition I decided to incorporate the idea of utilizing an individuals own personal experiences. In the article, "Pluralistic Leadership: Incorporating Diverse Voices" by Adrianna Kezar (2000), she discusses the importance of individual experiences and how they greatly impact one's leadership abilities. The article also discussed three different forms of leaderships that all discuss how individual experiences can influence one's view of leadership. They include; servant leadership, servants to the central administration, and pushing paper. After reading this article it really made me think about my own experiences and my leadership style. I truly believe that I too have incorporated my experiences into the way I lead others today. This article brought up a very important point, in my opinion, and I think that many others would also agree that their own leadership qualities mirror what they have experienced throughout their own life.

I choose not to change this weeks definition because I did not find this weeks readings to really alter my belief in leadership. The one article we read from Kegan and Lahey was basically a short story about a group of individuals and their experience with creating group leadership. I like how my definition has grown over the last couple of weeks and I look forward to reading our assigned articles after break. I know that I will only continue to learn more about leadership and what it takes to become a great leader.

This week I changed my definition slightly after reading the article by by Barbuto and Wheeler called, "Becoming a Servant Leader: Do you have what it takes?" (2007). Within the article they discuss multiple characteristics that a servant leader must display and growth was one of the sub topics that was discussed. Leaders must be committed to helping their employees grow and develop into stronger and more successful individuals. I have discovered that the leaders that I have had in my life that have meant something to me helped me grow as a person both professionally and personally.

There are two characteristics that I would like to focus on in my definition this week that I think are very important, compassion and trust. After re-reading the article by Rath and Conchie (2009) they discuss how showing compassion and displaying trust are very important for a leader to display. The article discusses the difficulty and importance of establishing a relationship and I would agree with this statement. Being more then just a co-worker can make a bond grow even stronger and make the work environment more enjoyable.
