The Office of Experiential Education has a new preceptor newsletter,
Preceptor Ponderings. It is available on the Experiential Education website.
Pharmacy students today are facing a rapidly changing and uncertain
health care environment. In response to the need for students to gain a
better understanding of the wide variety of career opportunities for
pharmacists, a mentoring practice experience has been offered for first
professional year pharmacy students at the University of Minnesota since
the 1995‐1996 academic year. The mentoring provides an opportunity for
students to get a first‐hand look at the opportunities and challenges of
a career in pharmacy during their first year of professional education.
By working one‐on‐one with practicing pharmacists as mentors, students
can build a strong support network and foundation for making career
decisions.

The Experiential Education Office is proud to announce the 2011 Preceptors of the Year!
This 2011 award goes to Dr. Christina Askew and Dr. Kimberly A. Glasoe.
Dr. Askew is an Acute Care APPE preceptor at Abbott Northwestern Hospital in Minneapolis. A few phrases taken from her nomination forms include: "She challenged me to do my best every moment", "Dr. Askew is a role model as a practicing pharmacist, preceptor and mentor", "her constant feedback and presence made my learning extremely effective and highly valuable".
Dr. Glasoe is a preceptor for an Emergency Medicine APPE at Mercy Hospital in Coon Rapids. One comment from Dr. Glasoe's nomination included; "not only do her actions inspire, the environment she has created in the ED demonstrates where my profession can be..." In describing the rotation, a student comments about a physician stating which professionals he wanted in a crowded room, "First I need my pharmacist..."
Congratulations to Dr. Glasoe and Dr. Askew for receiving these awards. On behalf of Experiential Education and the "Class of 2011", a special thank you to ALL of our preceptors who work hard to teach and inspire our students. We couldn't do this without you and your dedication!
