Making time for one media interview can be worth more coverage than you might guess. Extension horticulture educator Terry Nennich found that the effect of cool weather on pumpkin crops had a warm reception in the media when his interview with the West Central Tribune (requires log-in) was published by at least six other news outlets, including KMSP-TV (FOX). This can happen when news outlets are owned by a larger corporation and share news, or when a wire service such as the Associated Press picks up the story. As coverage expands, more reporters eventually come calling for their own story. Bottom line in this case: a five-minute phone interview with a reporter can often help you reach thousands of Minnesotans.
