Extension and CFANS Transition to Google Apps

Since last fall, the University has been working with colleges, departments and units to transition to Google Apps, a suite that includes email, calendar and other communication and collaboration tools.  Extension is planning an organization-wide transition to Google Apps for all Extension faculty and staff in fall 2010--after the bulk of state and county fair efforts have subsided.  Extension IT is currently working on a detailed project plan to ensure a smooth transition for all staff.  Updates and announcements will be distributed via listservs and Extension enews, and will be posted to the Extension Google Apps employee webpage throughout the duration of this project.

The long-term goal of the University is for all faculty, staff and students to adopt Google Apps. Most immediately, CFANS faculty and staff on the Twin Cities campuses are scheduled to make the transition beginning July 12.  This may affect some Extension staff, especially Extension staff who hold joint appointments with CFANS or who are directly supported by the CFANS IT department.  Those staff members should email the CFANS IT helpdesk with any questions about the CFANS transition to Google Apps. All other Extension staff will wait to transition with Extension in fall 2010.

Since CFANS staff will be changing their calendar client from UMCal to Google Calendar, it may be necessary for Extension staff to schedule appointments with those folks directly by email (or by another means) as an interim solution until Extension makes the transition to Google Calendar in the fall.  For questions about Extension's transition to Google Apps, stay tuned to the Extension Google Apps employee webpage or contact Rex Wheeler at
