The University of Minnesota is celebrating the inauguration of Eric W. Kaler during the week of September 19 and Extension will be featured in two of the week's events: the St. Paul campus tour on Monday, and the Urban Research and Outreach Center open house (see UROC article below) on Tuesday.
During the tour of the St. Paul campus, Extension will feature our work in turfgrass as an example of Extension research and education that impacts the economy and the environment through industry and consumer audiences. Brian Horgan, associate professor, Extension turfgrass specialist and horticulture program leader, and Bob Mugaas, Extension professor in horticulture, will lead President Kaler and Dean Bev Durgan through a tour of the Turfgrass Research, Outreach and Education (TROE) Center. TROE is a living laboratory on the St. Paul campus where researchers discover how to grow better grasses in our harsh climate, manage water use, and reduce the runoff of pesticides and herbicides.
Also during the St. Paul campus tour, President Kaler will see another example of Extension research and education as the College of Food, Agricultural and Natural Resource Sciences (CFANS) features the Bee Lab. Marla Spivak, Extension entomologist, CFANS professor and 2011 MacArthur Foundation "Genius Grant" winner, will give a tour of the only bee research, outreach, and teaching program in the Upper Midwest.
