International Summer Academy Working Lives in Global History
2- 9 October 2011, NOIDA (Delhi, India)

The IGK Work and Human Life Cycle in Global History (Humboldt University Berlin), the Centre for Modern Indian Studies (University of Goettingen) and the V.V. Giri National Labour Institute (NOIDA/ Delhi, India) in cooperation with the Association of Indian Labour Historians hold an international Summer Academy exploring the historical and contemporary meanings of work in relation to life course in different socio-economic and cultural contexts.

The Summer Academy is open for doctoral students working in the field of labour from historical and social science perspectives and will be held at the V. V. Giri National Labour Institute in Delhi between October 2 and October 9, 2011.

The need for an intensive engagement with these issues arises from a fundamental redefinition of work and life course that has emerged along with rapid globalisation. The Summer Academy shall focus methodologically on historical perspectives that investigate global interconnections and entanglements and/or employ methodologies of comparison. The thematic focus includes general comparative notions such as work and labour, working life, life course, intergenerational changes and labour process.

Central questions related to the following themes shall be discussed at the proposed Summer Academy.
- work and gender
- household and reproduction
- work and leisure, work schedule
- precarious work
- livelihood entitlements and strategies
- underemployment, unemployment, non-work
- work and public health
- work and religion
- work and technology
- politics of work and labour

Moreover, the Summer Academy will also provide space for an in depth discussion of methodological issues. The Summer Academy will be led by renowned historians and social scientists from around the world.

Proposed projects should reflect upon the relation between work and life course, assume a historical perspective and will be particularly pertinent if they take account of connections beyond the nation state as well as the possibilities of connecting regional and systematic approaches.

Travel and lodging costs of the selected participants will be covered by the organisers of the Summer Academy.

We welcome relevant applications from all parts of the globe. Candidates from South Asia are particularly encouraged to apply.

To participate in the Summer Academy research scholars at the doctoral level need to apply with:

- A brief outline of their current project (max. 2 pages)
- An essay on how their work relates to the themes of the Summer Academy and how they can contribute to it (max. 1 page)
- CV and the names of two referees (incl. email addresses)

Please use the electronic form on our website: http://rework.hu-berlin.de (tba)
