Addendum to exercise 4, option 2

The text to read and consider for exercise 4, option 2 is at a new URL: Mea culpa
The fgdc reorganized the web site, so the paths to things have changed. It's now at:

Could you clarify the two questions for exercise 4, option 3? I thought I understood them, but now I am getting hung up on the term namespace. What do you mean by that?

"namespace" is an XML concept for refering to a node in an xml hierarchy. If you search the web for 'metadata namespace' you'll find over a million hits!
To cut to the chase, go to the W3C website (http://www.w3.org/TR/xml-names11/) and you'll find a more detailed description. Here's what the abstract says: "XML namespaces provide a simple method for qualifying element and attribute names used in Extensible Markup Language documents by associating them with namespaces identified by IRI references."

is anyone else having trouble downloading the software packages for option 1? Ina and I are in 410 blegen, and we are unable to run the packages after downloading them both on my laptop and on the computers here in the lab.

Well, I attempted to understand that document on XML, namespaces and IRI references, but somehow it just confused the issue. I downloaded LMIC's Minnesota Metadata stylesheet/editor so I could use it in ArcCatalog. I was going to just convert the file that way. But because this is a specific software package I don't know if this is on the fly or how that alters namespace proposals. Moreover, would that be considered a cross domain management tool?

So.. I started option 2 thinking I just picked an exercise that was for the programmers in our class, but I don't know how to start to run mp. I downloaded it and see it on my C drive. But it isn't the nice windows operating program that I am used to. I know nothing about command prompt, so trying to run it in that format isn't working for me. I feel like I needed more information about the technical issues of metadata to do this assignment.

Moreover, after "reading" the powerpoint, I am not sure if cost, easy training, and the issues on the slide titled "US National Profile" get to the heart of question two on option 2. Is that what the question is driving at?

Does anyone have any suggestions?

I was able to get the mp program running. I don't know if there is a problem with rights with the lab computers but I installed it on a computer that I do not have admin rights to. I can help with Command Line problems. I will be available from 9 - 11 ish tonight. 612-616-5541

I think/hope Tom can help with the basic mp problems. I probably didn't make clear enough that these tools are quite complicated. Of course, once you get the hang of them everything is ok...

The namespace concept allows for URL level access to metadata records, meaning it's access from anywhere, 24/7. The potential of users from other domains accessing the technology means that cross-domain issues need to be dealth with more directly than with the library catalog model for accessing metadata (Z 39.50)

I can go over this tomorrow some more if people want.

does anyone know the difference between embedded and associated metadata for option 1?

I would like if you went over the aspects of this exercise a bit more in class. But if I am the only one that feels that way, I understand. The way it stands now, there is now way I can finish the exercise before noon.

What are the specific problems?

I downloaded mp at my personal computer because the labs don't let you have admin. rights. Sorry I didn't call you Tom, I don't have a computer at home that lets me download large files so doing it after work hours wasn't possible.

I found this that looks like you don't have to download the mp program:
http://geo-nsdi.er.usgs.gov/validate.php

Good show! That webpage looks like a cgi interface to mp.

So I uploaded my two metadata records- and got a text file back that said they have almost 100 errors for each file. Is that pretty typical?

My experience was that metadata from the 'Minnesota' stylesheet had over 100 errors. I found some non minnesota metadata created with mp and still had 20 errors. More manageable though.
