The newly established research project [NavTalk]: "Cognitive maps of buildings for navigation and
communication" is seeking a researcher for the analysis of natural language as a representation of
cognitive processes. The goal of the project is to investigate how humans understand and talk about
the spatial layout of buildings when navigating and solving problems in indoor environments.
Specifically, it will address the significance of humans' cognitive maps of buildings for navigation by
systematically investigating wayfinding behavior and linguistic production in parallel, focusing on the
particular spatial elements that are fundamental to wayfinding processes within buildings. The
successful applicant of the currently advertised position will be concerned predominantly with the
analysis of free language production data, but work in close international and interdisciplinary
cooperation with behavioral researchers within the field of Spatial Cognition.
Applicants should have a degree in linguistics or in a related field (diploma, MA, or Ph.D.).
Especially, they should have qualifications and/or interests in the following fields:
• Empirical, cognitive discourse analysis
• Experimental data collection, transcription, computer-based annotation, and analysis
• Spatial language and spatial cognition
• Cognitive strategies

We offer the opportunity to gain research experience in a modern and enthusiastic research
environment with strong interdisciplinary and international links. Responsibilities include project work
and research, publication of research results, supervision of student projects, participation in the
activities of the SFB/TR 8, and contribution to research proposals.
