Laurent Gbagbo was captued and taken into custody by his rivals on Monday, ending a four month standoff that left hundreds dead and dragged the country back into civil war.
For months, African officials have been trying to get Gbagbo to step down, but he would not giv up power, even after losing a presidential election last year, according to the New York Times.
Gbagbo's capture came after French helicopters heavily attacked the presidential bunker where Gbagbo was trapped, according to the Los Angeles Times.
Gbagbo and his wife had been held up in the bunker for days when the French helicopters bombarded the compound, aiming at taking out his weapons.
This force could have sparked even more animosity from Gbagbo supporters.
