New York Marathon cancelled

Sunday's New York Marathon was cancelled Friday mayor Michael Bloomberg's office, the Huffington Post reported.
"The Marathon has been an integral part of New York City's life for 40 years and is an event tens of thousands of New Yorkers participate in and millions more watch," Bloomberg and New York Road Runners president Mary Wittenberg said in a joint statement, reported ESPN. "While holding the race would not require diverting resources from the recovery effort, it is clear that it has become the source of controversy and division."
Bloomberg had recently planned to proceed with the marathon in the wake of Hurricane Sandy, and the decision to cancel the marathon came after heavy scrutiny.
