Pequot Lakes Eagles Club visits King Tut Exhibit

The Pequot Lakes Eagles went on a club field trip to the Science Museum on June 24th. They went through the King tut exhibit and watched the show "Mummies" at the omni theater.

For a couple kids, this was their first trip to the museum. It was amazing seeing things that were 1,000s of years old. Kids commented on the cat sarcophagus and the small bed found in

King Tut's tomb. There were many pieces of gold jewelry and a large statue from the tomb. After the exhibit the kids were able to explore the science and technology exhibits. They

pretended to the a news anchor and microbiologist looking at slides under a microscope. When asked what they liked best, most commented "everything".

Mississippi Movers Tour of Northwest Pizza

Submitted by Ann Warling

The Mississippi Movers 4-H Club toured Northwest Pizza. Owner Tom Perttula explained many aspects of the business, allowed the kids a first-hand look into the kitchen, and explained the different ingredients used.

While half of the club explored with Tom. 4-H Leader Jodi Carley presented information regarding Consumer Education. The information shared and discussion with members was valuable. This tour was planned as preparation for our February 6 Food Project meeting.

BLACK BEAR 4-H CLUB Meeting Notes for January 2010

Submitted by Cindy Terwilliger

A great meeting...we welcomed more new members to the club!

011.JPG 016.JPG 013.JPG 014.JPG

We voted to donate $100.00 to the North American Bear Center in Ely, Minnesota. We thought it would be fun to support research about black bears because of the obvious reason....we are the BLACK BEAR 4-H CLUB!

Check out the den cam they have stationed at the mouth of Lily's den by going to www.bear.org.

Lily is a 3 year old bear about to give birth. Our members volunteer to give a bear report each month and we look forward to learning more about the black bear. Other mammals we've supported and studied include bats and whales.

Committees were set up to plan activities to learn about and support our troops, to plan a parent meeting and our Winter Project Meeting Day.

The club is finalizing plans for conducting the Mini Jubilee for kids ages 2-12 at Nisswa Elementary School on Feb. 13th from 10-11. Always fun...games, face painting, crafts, snacks...and then watch the parade in downtown Nisswa!

Justin gave a demonstration on Homemade Cocoa Mix and Joe showed four shooting positions.

Our program this month was Crafts and Fine Arts. The three stations set up were Tri Bead Valentine Hearts, Stamped Paper Valentine Boxes, and Tangrams- a Chinese puzzle. Youth split into groups and visited each station.

Support Our Troops

When the Black Bear 4-H Club says we support our troops we really mean "our" troop!
Joyce Payonk graduated from the Black Bear 4-H club in 2008 and joined the Army Reserves soon after.

Joyce will be deployed to Iraq soon and the club invited her to give a program at our November meeting. She showed and explained each piece of her uniform and other gear she will need then gave us the order to perform exercises along with her and lead us in a drill (she said we did pretty good!). Our Shooting Sports members wished she could have brought the guns she uses!

At our December meeting the club voted to add supporting our troops to our other community service learning projects for the 2009-2010 year. In January a committee will be formed to plan types of activities we'd like to pursue.

Other club families have members that are, or were, deployed and this will be a good way for us to learn more about their service while we provide support.

Black Bear Club Annual Awards Banquet

Submitted by Cindy Terwilliger

The Black Bear club held their annual Awards Banquet November 1st , at Gloria Dei Lutheran Church in Pequot Lakes. The theme was "4-H Around the World" with the setting an Italian café and the main course spaghetti. At the October meeting members made flags of different countries offering some type of 4-H, and cutouts of people with their names on them to be placed on the banner during the program.

Youth chose a country and looked online to find facts about that country's 4-H program that were read. It was very interesting to learn what 4-H is like in other countries!

Awards and recognition given yearly include:
Participation Award
Attendance Award
Adult Recognition
Shining Star Award (Cloverbuds and 3-13)
Friend of Black Bear Award

New this year was the Adult Shining Star Award which was presented to Sylvie Gilman for her dedication to our club.

The 37 who attended the banquet had a great time sharing in celebrating the achievements of the Black Bear 4-H Club youth.

Black Bear Club - Meeting Minutes

Black Bear Club

The Black Bear 4-H Club participates in several Community Service projects each year. Some are geared towards assisting the community on a one time basis and others fit the criteria of a service-learning project.

The Heritage Garden Community Service-Learning Project is going into it's sixth year. We started with a bare piece of ground and now have several colorful gardens filled with "antique" perennials and annuals like our great grandmothers might have grown.

Through this project, club members have learned about soil, mulch, roots, starting seeds, and taking cuttings of plants to keep over winter. Most importantly they've learned responsibility. If you don't water the garden when it's your turn, plants could die! This year's goal for the garden was met in September when we built a rustic arbor over the walkway we made two years ago.

A continuing service-learning project such as this gives youth and adults associated with it a feeling of accomplishment and ownership. Stop by the Pioneer Village in Nisswa next summer and see how our gardens grow!

What happens at a 4-H Club meeting?

Your 4-H Club will meet to plan and conduct the club's 4-H activities. There are typically
three parts to a 4-H Club meeting:

  1. The business meeting is conducted by the President. During this time club activities, programs, and events are discussed and acted upon.
  2. Education is an important part of the club meeting. Various methods may be used to present subject matter including: 4-H Demonstrations, project talks, speakers, project experiences, movies, etc.
  3. Fellowship is part of the overall 4-H program and recreation is one way that this can be developed. Songs, games, or skits make up this fun part of the meeting.

Perhaps the most important factor in a successful meeting is a wide level of participation from all club members. 4-H'ers are encouraged to participate in the 4-H meeting by:
♦ keeping up-to-date on what's going on - read newsletter, ask questions
♦ presenting ideas
♦ serving on committees
♦ giving demonstrations and project talks

Club Offices and Roles
Club members are chosen by their peers to give leadership to the club by serving as:
President - Presides at all 4-H meetings & appoints committees as needed.
Vice President - Serves in the absence of the President.
Secretary - Records minutes or actions of the meeting and handles correspondence.
Treasurer - Keeps up-to-date financial records and pays bills as directed by club.
Reporter - Writes reports of club meetings and events for local newspaper.
Recreation/Song Leader: Plans and leads songs and games at 4-H meetings.
Other Offices: Some clubs may also elect: callers, historians, scrapbook, etc.

Demonstrations and Illustrated Presentations
Demonstrations and illustrated presentations are a lot like show and tell. Members are
encouraged to demonstrate and present at club meetings and/or county events to share
their learning. Two 4-H members may work together as team presenters. Additional information on this topic is available from your County Extension Office or on-line at www.fourh.umn.edu.

Presentation Formats
Illustrated Presentation: Oral presentation that presents an idea, concept, viewpoint or
experience in an educational or informative format. Most often consists of interaction with
supporting visuals (i.e. PowerPoint, models, posters).
Demonstration: Oral presentation that includes actually demonstrating the hands-on steps
required to accomplish a task or process. Should be a finished product upon conclusion.
Youth In Action: Interactive, continuous presentations. More time is allowed for audience involvement and interaction.

Demonstration and Illustrated Presentation Tips:
1. Introduction: Interesting, short, complete, attention getting! Should include who you are,
what your presentation is about and why you feel it is important.
2. Topic: Related to a project, interest or activity.
3. Appearance: Dress appropriate, well groomed, good posture, feet together, smile!
4. Presentation: Voice natural, words distinct, poised, friendly, confident, convincing, well
organized. Originality shown.
5. Subject Matter: Emphasize important points. Information accurate, complete, usable.
6. Workmanship: Skillful. Good teamwork, if a team. Time and materials well used. Work and
speech coordinated. Table neat and orderly, visuals easily viewed by audience.
7. Equipment: Suitable for demonstration or illustrated presentation. Good visual aids if needed.
8. Conclusion: Stress important points in summary. Show finished product if there is one. Definite closing (be creative, tie it in with the introduction). Questions answered satisfactorily.
