Pub Sounds

Download file

With my piece I have tried to capture the richness and diversity of sounds that a person is exposed to in a pub. My piece has a narrative aspect in that it guides the listener through the process of visiting an Irish pub instead of placing them immediately into the pub’s sonic atmosphere. This piece is meant to introduce the audience to how sounds have a tendency to blend, but at the same time it shows that we identify single sounds out of a mass. For instance, while many surrounding tones such as talking, laughing and music mix into a constant “room tone?, we still have a tendency to focus on one sound leading to another. Sometimes we may hear a laugh and the next second we hear the clank of a glass. A string of sounds moving in and out of the background “room tone? guides our aural experience of a particular place. The place that I chose to explore is an Irish pub.
