Critique for Alan

I really liked the way that Alan made his stop motion project. Although the sound aspect of the project was not the absolutely most interesting, i did find that the sounds went well with the visuals. This is most evident, i think, when the guy is eating the apple. This shows that Alan has a very good grasp on both the visual and audio aspects of this process. As far as the drawings he did are concerned, they were very very well made, and I thought it was fantastic that he put that much time into making the character and the train and the setting and everything like that. Also, the interaction between the tree and the train and the guy sitting next to the tree was quite interesting. I thought for sure that when the train ran into the tree it would topple the tree on top of the guy, but rather all it did was startle him, and then drop an apple from the tree for him to eat. This is why I also like this presentation for the theme of a perfect world. Although things are going to happen that are out of your control, it is nice to be able to think that maybe even when things seem like they are going wrong there is something out there that can keep you safe.

Critique for Amanda

I really enjoyed the work that Amanda presented for the stop motion project. The use of the Russian lullaby, i believe thats what it was anyways, combined with the music from the music box really made for an interesting experience. The flow worked quite well throughout the film. The transitions between frames was quite well done. As far as paying close attention to detail goes, Amanda did a fantastic job. Personally I did not necessarily enjoy the music that was playing from the music box, but as I said before, I do believe that it had a really nice flow to it, which added an enjoyable aspect to the presentation. Although I was unable to read the subtitles translating what was being said, it did not bother me, because something about the red text kind of added a different feel to the presentation. It was almost like we were not supposed to be able to read what was being said, but rather just experience the sound the feel that it creates. overall this was a very good project in my opinion and it was very interesting to watch.

Critique for Donny's Project

The clip started off with some humor. The idea of utopia here is the material wealth I think, but after the first sequence I was lost. This clip probably could have used more sound because it seemed empty. Also, the question about watching TV was irrelevant to me and I did not understand it. The story could also use a narrative (like a voice or titles before the scenes) to help guide the viewer along. Transitions would have helped bring the story together.

Lisa Lapinski

I was very surprised at the number of people that showed up to the visiting artist lecture. All in all, it was nice to see an artist that really doesn't put too much thought behind her work. Although i did not really find her work all that interesting, I did like the way that she spoke so informally but at the same time, fore a lecture like that it would have been nice to have more organization. The work of hers that had the symbols of religion and the swastica and stuff on it really stood out to me, but not for any reason other than the fact that i recognized the symbols that were on it. I do remember when she was talking about how her friends work was criticized for not having enough meaning and she defended her friend. This part i liked because the work that i do does not have all that much meaning either, i just like to make things that look cool.

project 3 proposal

Project Proposal
A perfect world means many different things to almost everyone. Although I have not worked out all of the details of my project, I can begin to tell what direction I am planning on going with this project. I will be working in a way that is similar to how South Park was made. Of course the ideas will not really coincide with the show, it will be completely original. I will create my own fictional characters to use in the filming. As far as I'm concerned, the things that would make up a perfect world are; no crime, no disease, no hunger, no taxes, and no douche bags to mess up all of the good things that modern society has to offer. Imagine if all the uptight and insecure people that find it necessary to cause problems or start shit all of a sudden vanished or something of that nature, leaving only those who wish to enjoy life and make the most of it. Now imagine unrestricted world travel, free trade everywhere, no taxation, a food surplus to end world hunger, and no illness. Now that sounds like someplace I'd like to live for a while, but since it can't happen, we can watch a little bit of what it might be like... I was thinking that the setting of this perfect world might as well be someplace with pleasant weather, so I'd have to say a beach community where it is sunny every day and warm all the time. Outdoor activities can go on year round and there is no excuse to just sit in the house for 5 months straight, and in this world, nobody will try and mug you if you go out of your house. Just think of not having to worry about going out in the middle of the night, or walking home from a friends house or the bar when its dark out, in this world, its always safe. And since this is a perfect world, nobody will have a stick up their ass shouting orders at you telling you what to do and what to think. I know that this idea doesn’t necessarily sound the most entertaining or interesting, but I will do my best to make it that way. Given these things, I really hope to make this a good experience, so I guess we will have to wait and see how it turns out.

Reflecting on project 1

For my first project I am actually happy with the result just for the simple fact that I had never done any sound editing quite like that before. Although I realized that there wasn't the best sense of walking around and hearing the different sounds of Ferguson hall, there was still a slight sense of movement. I now know that i really should have attempted to focus in on the music coming from the practice rooms, but I did run into a couple problems with the lack of sound proofing in those rooms. All in all it was a good learning experience and I was not disappointed with the results.

Project 2 proposal

For the second project I have thought it over and decided that I will make a video on how to make a cool looking piece of art. I do not plan to make it a basic instructional video at all. I plan to incorporate the sounds that I generally hear when I'm working on a piece and I will make an attempt to recreate the atmosphere. I have not decided how exactly I will go about this, but I think it will be possible with changes in lighting and perhaps some interesting imagery. For the medium I have not decided whether to use pen, pencil, chalk, color pastels, or paint, but I am leaning towards the color pastels because of how fun they are to work with. I don't want this to turn out like one of the Bob Ross videos where he very rapidly creates an elaborate painting. Instead I plan to make a somewhat time intensive piece of art and just give an overview of the process so that the whole process will not need to be recorded but the viewer should still be able to recognize the steps that it takes to get to a final product. I am still coming up with ideas for how to make this an interesting video that will actually draw the viewer in with something they may like to hear and look at, but that will most definitely be a challenge since everyone has very different ideas of what is interesting and entertaining. I am going to also make an attempt at giving a sense to the viewer of how much I actually enjoy the process of making a piece of art. This may be one of my biggest challenges of this whole video making process, but I plan on trying very hard to get that point across. As far as the work that I am going to produce is concerned, I have not yet decided what it should be. I always enjoy doing a work that has some personal meaning to me, whether it be an experience that I had or a song that I listened to and really enjoyed. So this means that now I will have to start looking for some inspiration for this piece. Generally speaking I will usually listen to a few songs that I like and see if I get any ideas. If that doesn't work then I will probably just pick something that is important to me, so it will be interesting to see what it ends up being.

Digital technology in my everyday life

As i think about how I use digital technology in my life I realize that it surrounds me at almost every point in the day. Every morning I wake up to my digital alarm clock blaring. When I go to play my guitar after class is done for the day i plug it into my digital amplifier. When i turn on the television set in the evening i recieve a digital cable signal that allows me to see whats on. If i ever have to measure the weight of something small i turn to my digital scale for help. Even when i got to check my emails every day i am using the digital technology in my computer to view the messages. all in all, it seems that digital technology is nearly inescapable today in our society.
