Seeking Chinese artists and cultural specialists

The Confucius Institute at the University of Minnesota is seeking to build a database of artists and cultural specialists who can perform, demonstrate and/or teach Chinese cultural arts and activities for K-12 and community audiences. We are interested in finding Chinese calligraphers, musicians, kung fu instructors and paper cutters, among other specialists.

Concordia Villages Twin Cities Programs

Concordia Language Villages has language immersion preschool programs in the Twin Cities area. We are currently looking for teachers for some of our fall classes.

SPANISH: In Minnetonka, we have both Lead Teacher and Assistant Teacher positions available for Thursday afternoons, Friday mornings, and/or Saturday mornings. In Woodbury, we have an Assistant Teacher position available for Tuesday and Thursday afternoons.

St. Paul Preparatory School in downtown St. Paul has an immediate opening for a part time Chinese Language teacher. Applications (due 5/16) to host an exchange teacher are currently
available for download at www.tclprogram.org. TCLP is a great program
that provides schools opportunities to develop and/or expand their
Chinese or Arabic language programs. Our program, through a grant from
the US Department of State, provides teachers' salaries, health care,
airfare, visa support, training, follow-up workshops, professional
development funds, and grant opportunities to support school

Position Description

SUMMARY:
American Councils is currently seeking a qualified Resident Director to work on a six-week summer program based at Northeast Normal University (NENU) in Changchun, Jilin Province. Resident Directors represent American Councils in their actions and words during the tenure of appointment. They must be available to program participants on a daily basis. The Summer Resident Director will be given housing in the NENU Foreign Teachers dormitory with the program participants and will have meals provided.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES FOR THIS POSITION INCLUDE:

· Observing participant classes at the host university;
· Meeting regularly with teachers, administrators, and participants;
· Working with Chinese counterparts to arrange group travel and cultural programs; and
· Reporting back on student achievements and progress.

Resident Directors must be available to participants during any emergencies that arise and must communicate regularly with the ISLI program staff in Washington, DC regarding student and host institution issues. Prior to departure for China, all Resident Directors will attend American Councils orientation programs for both staff and participants in Washington, DC. The Summer Resident Director reports to the ISLI Senior Program Manager.


QUALIFICATIONS:
· Bachelor’s degree or higher in Chinese language or area studies or equivalent;
· Advanced Chinese language skills -- written and oral (minimum 2/2+ on ACTFL scale)
· Study, work, or extensive travel experience in China;
· Experience overseeing and guiding groups (prefer experience with teachers);
· Demonstrated skills in academic and personal counseling; and
· Demonstrated skills in general financial accountability.

To support the improvement of instruction of Less Commonly Taught Languages (LCTLs), the University of Minnesota's National Resource Centers offer a limited number of $600 stipends for LCTL teachers to help defray the cost of attending any of the CARLA summer institutes. The University NRCs--the Consortium for the Study of the Asias (CSA), the European Studies Consortium (ESC) and the Institute for Global Studies (IGS)--are funded by the U.S. Department of Education and sponsor this program as part of their mission to support LCTL teachers.

Chinese jobs information--from Ian Burns

Dr Ian Burns, coordinator of Saint Paul Schools Chinese Articulation Project and secretary of the MN Association of Chinese Language Teachers, kindly provided these job information:

St. Paul Schools will be starting a K - 6 program in September of this year. If anyone is interested in this job they should contact, now,Kenyatta Carter in Human Resources at St.Paul Public Schools.I hope to be able to arrange some early preparation time payment for the successful applicant to assist me in curriculum development and preparation for a new program in the selected school.

We are also looking for a teacher to teach one hour a day at Highland Park Senior HIgh School, which is at the South end of Snelling Avenue in St.Paul. This teacher has usually been paid approximately $25 per hour for two hours a day - one hour teaching and one hour preparation. It could be asort of extended teaching practise with some pay and an introduction tolife in an American high school.

SPPS also are seeking a half time bilingual, Chinese/English technical person, approximate salary $19000 per annum, who should be someone with a degree in technology interested in assisting classroom teachers with the effective use of technology in Chinese language teaching.
