The IGGDS is the result of nearly 25 years of interest and collaboration from students, faculty, administrators and community members at the University of Minnesota. This long-awaited initiative aims to develop a permanent graduate-level minor in Disability Studies on campus that will attract students and faculty from a diverse array of fields. The IGGDS is competitively funded by the University of Minnesota Graduate School as an Interdisciplinary Graduate Group (IGG).
Already, the IGGDS is composed of students, faculty and staff from over a dozen University departments and programs. Participants in IGGDS come from the following fields:

- Pharmacology
- Educational Psychology
- Post-Secondary Teaching and Learning
- Architecture
- French (Morris campus)
- Spanish and Portuguese
- Gender, Women, and Sexuality
- Public Affairs (Humphrey Institute)
- Speech-Language-Hearing Sciences
- Work and Human Resource Education
- Nursing
- Molecular, Cellular, Developmental Biology and Genetics
- Social Work
- Health Policy and Management
