How can I post messages in the blog?

I have allowed all people who had contacted me rights to post messages, so just send me an e-mail (geno0015 at umn.edu) with your UofM ID, and I will add you. The rest should be easy :)

Internship Geneva '06

Here is my presentation from our first meeting this semester. It is about my internship in Geneva this summer. I had very short time to make it, so I guess there will be many questions (please ask them as comments to the entry)... About the pictures... when we see each other :)
I guess that Gulia might also post her presentation next week.

Time of Regular Meetings

Please, share your ideas about when we should meet this semester:

Current preferred regular meeting time:
Wednesday (12.45pm - 2pm).

Note: Meeting on Oct 4th will be earlier (11.30am - 12.40pm)

Proposals so far:

a/ Wednesday (12.45 - 2pm) - most people are ok so far, we will try to organize presentations, if not, we can go to lunch together, or we can go out in some of the evenings
b/ Wednesday (11.30 - 12.45pm) - could possibly also work. Some first year students start a class in this time slot from Oct 30.

Please, give new ideas or support by commenting on this entry. No deadline. I will change the entry when we decide something else.

Ideas About New Name

Please, give ideas for a new name of Foreign Policy Society. We think that we should change the name of our group, and there are two proposals so far:

a/ Global Policy Society
b/ Global Policy Forum

Please, give more ideas by commenting on this entry. Ideas will be collected by Oct 4th (Wednesday), and then we will vote.
Make an impact! Share your vision with us!

Where can I post ideas about events/meetings?

Please, post ideas about meetings, events, activities in the Ideas (What should we do) category. Thanks :)

Meeting: Oct 4

Next Meeting: Informal Lunch and Poster (note the earlier time!)

WHAT: Informal Lunch and Poster of Global Policy Society/Forum
WHERE: Jernberg Lounge
WHEN: Oct 4 (11.30am - 12.40pm - the earlier time is due to the Political Debates, which start at 12.45pm)
WHO: You

Everyone is welcome. Please, bring food for yourself. I will try to provide funding for the next informal events, but I am not sure if I will be able for this one :) We will make a poster, so creative ideas and materials are welcome!
See you there!

First meeting - Genko Genov and Gulnara Minnigaleeva talk about their Internships in Geneva

New name, Internships in Geneva, Ideas!

First meeting for Fall 2006 was on Sep 27 (Wed) in HHH 25.
There were some first year (welcome!) and second year students, and pizza :)

First, we started with a short movie about Geneva, and then Genko and Gulia made short presentations about their experiences in Geneva this summer.

It seemed to me that the most interesting issue was our experience and advice how students can find internships in international organizations like the UN, WHO, WTO, etc.
I have uploaded my presentation in the International Internships category. You can ask me more question there :)

Finally, we discussed what Foreign Policy Society should be, and there are several ideas that we came upon:
1. We should change the name of the organization - there were two proposals - Global Policy Society or Global Policy Forum. Please, give your ideas in the Let's decide together! category of the blog :)

2. We should meet at least once a week. If "formal" presentations or other events cannot be organized, we can go together to lunch, or have a drink after the classes. The time of the next meeting can be decided in the previous week (and is flexible), but most meetings will be on Wednesday (12.45 - 2pm), so that people can plan in advance. Please, give us your opinion about the time of the meetings in the voting section (so far, most people sent me e-mails about Wed 12.45-2pm :)

3. We should make a poster about us, and put it in Jernberg or Room 40. We can make it in our next meeting. We can advertise the time and place of our meetings within this poster. In this way, everyone will know where to find us.

4. You are welcome to join us, give ideas, and make presentations!.. Just send an e-mail, or make a post here :)

Some hints on how to use the blog

Hi everyone,

This is an attempt to make a blog for the Global Policy Society/Forum (we should decide about the name:), where we can exchange ideas about various global issues. It is intended primarily (but not only) for students in the Humphrey Institute of Public Affairs and the University of Minnesota

Here are some kind of guidelines that it might be worth following by all of us. I have seen most of them in other blogs, and they tend to make the usage of the blog more efficient and easy to work with. Please add your comments and proposals!

1. Please, read the FAQs before asking questions about the usage of the blog. Your question might already have been answered :)

2. There are three basic ways to post information on the blog - (1) make a new category and post a new entry there, (2) post a new entry in an existing category, or (3) post a comment to an already existing entry.

3. Please, attach the respective category, when you post your entry.

4. Please, do not create new categories if there are similar existing ones that correspond with the topic of your message. It makes the blog much easier to follow.

5. Be aware of copyright issues when you share information. It is your personal responsibility.

6. In your postings, write e-mail addresses in the form: name at umn.edu, where at represents @. In this way, web site scanning programs cannot read them and use them to send spam e-mails.

7. Avoid language that you would not use when you participate in real life conversations.

Well, that's all I can think up now. Please, leave suggestions and let's make this blog a lively, interesting, and entertaining (virtual) place.
