On Tuesday, September 20, Mrs. Karen Kaler hosted a reception for GMD supporters at the presidents' home, Eastcliff. After gathering on the back patio, attendees heard from GMD Director Lin Nelson-Mayson, Mrs. Karen Kaler, College of Design Dean Tom Fisher, GMD Advisory Board President Dan Avchen, and two GMD interns, Jess Barness and Misty Karges.
Mrs. Kaler spoke to the crowd about her recent and upcoming experiences at the U of M, and when U of M staff asked where she was most interested in visiting during her first weeks at the University, Mrs. Kaler said she wanted GMD to be her first stop! As a designer herself, Mrs. Kaler expressed her appreciation of all that we do, and is thankful for all the wonderful support we continually receive.
Jess spoke about the project she completed for the Jerome Joss Internship. Her interest in graphic design lead her to explore the complete series of Emigre magazine within the GMD collection. After learning that GMD is the only museum she could find with a complete collection of Emigre, she challenged herself to create a website with photos and information depicting the full collection.
Misty spoke about the Lila R. Bath Internship where she traveled to San Antonio, Texas where she explored the University of the Incarnate Word archives. She was excited to explore the archives and visually research unique artistic styles. After completing the internship, Misty was so inspired by what she had seen, she is basing her senior project on what she saw.
At the end of the program, Lin pointed out that many pieces at Eastcliff were on loan from GMD, leading visitors to mingle and explore the beautiful Eascliff grounds and home. Thank you Mrs. Kaler for hosting a beautiful event, and thanks to all of the attendees for your ongoing support!
