A tunnel collapse has been linked to nine deaths about 80 kilometers west of Tokyo, CNN reported.
The collapse burned multiple vehicles, and five bodies were found in a station wagon, while three were found in another vehicle
The New York Times reported supports of the ceiling in the 35-year-old tunnel were wearing out, which allowed 1.2 ton slabs to collapse on vehicles.
Crews worked to save possible victims, despite the possibility of the the tunnel collapsing more. The CNN report indicated that crews are still working to save victims.
The collapse backed up one of the major highways in Tokyo. Some of those who escaped the tunnel did so by foot.
There is no indication of when the tunnel is going to reopen.
