Position Open: International Conflict Resolution Visiting Senior Research Scholar

The Visiting Senior Research Scholar is a professional officer of research whose qualifications are equivalent to those of a professor -- i.e., he/she holds a doctorate.

He/she also performs independent research in the area of his/her training and will also be responsible for leading a three part lecture series (one a month) at Columbia University on a topic of interest, to be determined in consultation with the Director of CICR. The lectures
will be published and recorded for CICR's website.

Established scholar with outstanding records of publication and teaching in the social sciences or humanities with special competencies in conflict prevention, conflict resolution, post-conflict
reconstruction, sustainable development, security and the global environment.

The Visiting Senior Research Scholar position is open to researchers and/or practitioners with a PhD and a minimum of 10 years of experience in the above fields.

The position also is designed to foster new scholarly experts in the following countries or regions: Italy, the Balkans, Iraq, Afghanistan, Peru, Colombia, China, the Middle East, and/or North Africa; therefore, applicants with experience teaching in or conducting research in these countries are strongly encouraged to apply. The successful candidate will possess a strong research record, including publications, as well as an inter-disciplinary orientation and
accomplishments in cross-cutting and cutting-edge initiatives.

The position, which is supported by The Fund for Global Environment and Conflict Resolution of the Italian Ministry for Environment, Land and Sea, is designed to support an outstanding
candidate with extensive experience and expertise in at least one of the following fields: conflict prevention, conflict resolution, post-conflict reconstruction, sustainable development, security and the global environment.

The visiting appointment will be for three months during academic year 2010-2011 (September 1, 2010 through June 30, 2011), with the period of the appointment to be determined by the successful candidate in consultation with the Center.

The Visiting Senior Research Scholar also will present the results of his/her research project at Columbia University at the end of their stay.

Applicants must include a proposal (up to 3 pages) of a research project to be undertaken while in residence at CICR in one of, or a combination of, the following broad fields:

* The prevention and control of potential conflicts in the use of natural resources with particular reference to China, Middle East and North Africa.

* Environmental solutions and sustainable development policies in conflict and post conflict areas, based on the ongoing activities of the Italian Ministry in the Balkans, Iraq, Afghanistan, Peru and Colombia as case studies. Areas of research might look into illicit land use for
drug trade and terrorist efforts.

* Climate change and its relationship to international security as a whole with regards to water security and food security.
