Fifteen graduate and professional degree students were awarded fellowships in 2009 through the Walter H. Judd International Graduate & Professional Fellowships. The 4 HHH recipients for 2010 were:
John Bowman
Country of Study -- Yemen
As a communications intern for the Cultural Development Program Fund (CDPF) Bowman will provide research and grant writing assistance, and develop content for international communications, lectures, and the CDPF website. Additionally, Bowman will study Arabic and live in intensive Arabic language housing at the Yemeni College of Middle Eastern Studies.
Marc Dettman
Country of Study -- Egypt
Dettman will intern for the United Nations Development Program (UNDP) Water Governance Program-Arab States, the regional office for the Middle East and North Africa. He will review gender and water management to map the interaction of different stakeholders and identify constraints and opportunities for greater gender equality in decision-making of water resources. In other research, Dettman will identify challenges, constraints, and opportunities of socio-economic and environmental issues within the integrated water resource management strategies of Arab states. He will also assist in preparing and reporting on a national capacity-building needs assessment for transboundary water.
Caroline Krafft
Country of Study -- Egypt
Krafft will research Egyptian gender and labor market dynamics as well as educational inequality as an intern for the Population Council in Cairo, Egypt. Understanding the challenges women face in participating in the economy and education systems can help us design more effective public policies to redress these inequities. Improving the education and economic status of women is an extremely relevant issue for international economic development.
Meredith Stocking
Country of Study -- Colombia
Stocking will intern with the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) Colombia Human Rights Program. During her internship she will systematize the results achieved to date by Colombian civil society organizations awarded USAID grants to carry out human rights advocacy. Stocking will conduct extensive interviews with these organizations in order to produce best-practice guidelines for carrying out advocacy work, and design a methodology to be used by civil society organizations to monitor human rights policies. Stocking will also design and implement a training workshop on monitoring human rights policies.
