The TIDES (Transformative Innovation for Development and Emergency Support) research project at the National Defense University invites the public to visit the 4th annual Fall field demonstration at Fort Lesley J. McNair from Tuesday, October 5th to Friday, October 8th.
The event will be live all week, so visitors are welcome anytime during normal working hours to address policies, practices, technologies, and organizations that affect complex civil-military environments such as Humanitarian Assistance/Disaster Relief (HADR), Stabilization and Reconstruction (S&R), Building Security Capacity (BSC), and Defense Support to Civil Authorities (DSCA).
Our focus is on active demonstrations of integrated infrastructures, and situational awareness tools. All activities will be independent of the power grid, and communications will be live. We will feature four sections:
· Building Security Capacity in Refugee Camp environments - Family-sized solution sets oriented towards hot, dry areas. Includes integrated solar and combustion cooking, distributed renewable power, water pasteurization bags, low-cost and low-power consumption information and communications technology (ICT) equipment.
· Stabilization and Reconstruction in Afghanistan - Many individuals and organizations who are currently working in Afghanistan will be here to discuss and share ideas. This will focus largely on the Distributed Essential Services - Afghanistan (DES-A) project, info sharing/sensemaking, distributed renewable energy, links to the Fab Lab near Jalalabad, near-real-time delivery of imagery and information without caveats to Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs), and infrastructure solutions that are appropriate.
· Disaster relief in the US - based on a natural or man-made disaster scenario in the National Capital Region. (DHS/FEMA/NORTHCOM links, use of the commercial supply chain, empowering citizens, Resilience Networks, etc.)
· Disaster relief in Tropical Regions (Central America and Western Pacific) - a camp-sized infrastructure for wet, tropical regions (wind and solar power solutions, water purification units, disaster management software, etc).
