Political Science 8860: European Politics
This course provides an introduction to the history, politics, and controversies of contemporary European politics. The course is split into three main sections. The introductory section asks how the European experience helps us understand broader approaches to social science research, examining questions of state formation, democratization and political economy through the lens of institutional, interest based approaches, and political identity. The second section is split into thematic sub-sections that deal with the main functions of the democratic state: encouraging economic growth, serving the well-being of citizens, representing citizens interests. The final section turns to important future questions that will define the coming century for Europe: the future of the European political economies, parties, the welfare state, and changing European identities.
