School & Teaching Supplies Needed for Zambia

Dr. Amy Hewitt (Institute on Community Integration, SSW PhD '98) and colleagues will travel to Zambia on March 30, 2011 to work with educators, advocates, families and policy makers in Zambia to develop and improve existing services and supports for children with intellectual and developmental disabilities. They will also be conducting research on assessment of children with autism in Zambian communities. Amy is a senior research associate at the U's Institute on Community Integration. They have an on-going partnership with a group of disability leaders in this country and have been making small incremental progress through our work over time.
Dr. Hewitt is asking for donations of high quality school and teaching supplies to take to Zambia. The four people traveling can take about 70 pounds of supplies. Items of particular interest are new teaching materials, pens, jump/flash drives, iTouch and iPads (they will load applications with augmentative and alternative communications aids on them such as Proloquo2go) and other useful materials for teachers and families who have children with developmental disabilities and autism.

Please deliver any donation you can make to room 204 Pattee Hall by March 25 or let Amy know and she can arrange to have items picked up. If you prefer to donate cash, they will purchase needed items for you. Any help would be greatly appreciated by their colleagues in Zambia and the children and families they support.

Contact Amy Hewitt at hewit005(at)umn.edu or 612-625-1098. And thank you.
