Professor Ed Goetz offered PA 5290: Cities of the Global South from May 16-31, 2011. The course met for two weeks during the May term. The first week students had an intensive class-room based experience. At the end of the first week students traveled to Dar es Salaam, Tanzania for a nine-day site visit.
This course examined issues related to rapid urbanization in the global south, with an emphasis on cities in sub-Saharan Africa. The extremely rapid rate of growth in African cities presents a range of public policy and planning challenges to local and national governments. Students explored trends related to informalization of the housing sector, the growth and importance of informal economic activity, infrastructural challenges related to roads and transport, water and sewage in Africa's urban centers.
