Study in Brazil in Spring/Summer 2012!

The College of Education and Human Development (CEHD) and College of Food, Agriculture, and Natural Resource Sciences (CFANS) announce a study abroad opportunity at the University of São Paulo, Brazil. Each participant selected for this program will receive University of Minnesota credit for coursework or independent studies taken in Brazil and a $5,000 travel stipend.

Who is eligible? Graduate and undergraduate students. Preference will be given to students in CEHD and CFANS. Applications are encouraged from students interested in a wide range of subjects, studied at CEHD and CFANS. Some of the past and current projects and programs of study address issues of diversity in educational institutions, teaching and learning, higher education, applied economics, human resource development, and food science and nutrition.

What is the program of study? Students may take coursework (in English or Portuguese) at USP, or may complete independent studies in collaboration with Brazilian and U.S. supervising professors. (Note that the independent study option is open to graduate students only). Students write a final report upon return, summarizing their experiences and learning.

How long does the program last? The program can last anywhere from four weeks (for independent studies) to a full semester (for coursework).

How much does the program cost? Participants receive credit from the University of Minnesota for the experience. Prior to leaving, participants enroll in 6-12 credits of EDHD 5100 and pay tuition for these credits (tuition credits such as graduate assistantships may not be used for this program, but financial aid may be used for tuition).

Can students use this experience to collect thesis or pre-thesis data? Yes

Can students use the independent study to network with Brazilian agencies and return later to collect dissertation or thesis data? Yes

Do I have to be fluent in Portuguese to participate in this program? Fluency in Portuguese is not required. However, students accepted into this program will be required to take pre-departure language training. Students will continue to study Portuguese during their stay in Brazil. While language acquisition is encouraged, at USP students will be able to communicate in English inside and outside of the classroom.

When is the application deadline? The application deadline for Spring 2012 semester is October 1. Two participants will be selected and receive a $5,000 award, furnished by the U.S. Department of Education's Fund to Improve Post-Secondary Education (FIPSE).
