Joan Brzezinski appointed Executive Director, UMN China Center & MN Confucius Institute

China Center Leadership

I'm pleased to announce that Joan Brzezinski has accepted the position of Executive Director, China Center and Confucius Institute. Joan has been the interim director of the China Center while serving in her permanent position as director of the Confucius Institute. In this new position as executive director, she will oversee all projects and programming within both the China Center and Confucius Institute, including fundraising for China initiatives and identifying opportunities to expand the University system's relationships in China, Hong Kong, and Taiwan. She will supervise the staff of the China Center, Confucius Institute, Beijing Office, and the new American Cultural Center. I am looking forward to the new opportunities and efficiencies that will come from the China Center and Confucius Institute working even more closely under the same strong leadership.

Joan has successfully managed both the China Center and the Confucius Institute single-handedly for more than a year. In addition, she was awarded a U.S. State Department grant to open an American Cultural Center in Tianjin and, for the third time, a $50,000 StarTalk grant for the Confucius Institute. She has also taken on significant responsibility for planning President Kaler's trip to Asia in June.

I know you will join me in congratulating Joan for her demonstrated and steadfast commitment to the China Center and the Confucius Institute and for all of the accomplishments she has achieved. She will be an excellent executive director and will serve the GPS Alliance and the University well.
