New Ventures is looking for a part-time or full-time intern to assist in research and writing. New Ventures (NV) is part of the Markets and Enterprise Program at World Resources Institute. The Markets and Enterprise Program seeks to direct the flow of capital towards sustainable businesses. New Ventures is the World Resources Institute's center for environmental entrepreneurship - providing business development services to environmentally-focused small and medium enterprises (SMEs) in emerging markets. New Ventures addresses the key barriers to "green" entrepreneurial growth by building in-country support networks for environmental enterprises and increasing their access to finance (for more information, see www.new-ventures.org). New Ventures works in 6 emerging markets--Brazil, China, Colombia, India, Indonesia, and Mexico. We produce research that informs investors about emerging trends, opportunities, and challenges in various environmental sectors where these SMEs operate, with a focus on clean energy, water, and sustainable agriculture. We draw on the expertise and research capabilities of the World Resources Institute and the on-the-ground knowledge of our New Ventures Local Centers. The intern will help produce a peer-reviewed research piece regarding market based solutions to energy access in India, as well as assist with other research tasks for New Ventures. Responsibilities: May/June Conduct web-based research and phone interviews on rural electrification policies in India. This initial scoping research will map rural electrification policies, including numerous energy subsidies and government programs that are currently being implemented by government ministries and agencies, such as the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy, the Indian Renewable Energy Development Agency and the Ministry of Power. Assist NV team in preparations for an Energy Access Workshop in early June 2011, focused on Clean Energy for the Base of the Pyramid. New Ventures will convene different stakeholders including enterprises, microfinance institutions, investors, NGOs and policy-makers to discuss key barriers and collaborative solutions.Assist with additional research tasks for other New Ventures countries as required. June - AugustNew Ventures will conduct in-depth research to document the "lessons learned" from a specific project area identified at the Energy Access Workshop. Examples of likely topics include: Clean Energy - Creating Microfinance Partnerships; Leveraging Existing Rural Retail Networks; or Systematizing Supply Chains for Waste Biomass. This research will culminate in the publication of a 5-6 page peer-reviewed Market Brief, which will illustrate successful practices and provide a road map for energy access companies facing barriers to growth. The intern will provide supporting research for this publication.Assist NV teams in China, India and Indonesia collaborate on cross-country events and programs as required.Assist NV team in other research projects as required.
Requirements
Student in Public Policy, Environmental Science, Business, International Development or related disciplines. Graduate student preferred.Excellent research, writing and quantitative skills. Familiarity with Indian energy issues, rural energy issues preferredFamiliarity with basic business concepts a plus. Familiarity with New Ventures countries a plus.Ability to work well in a team, manage multiple priorities, take initiative, and deliver under tight deadlines.Familiarity with Mandarin, Spanish or Portugese a plus.Salary and benefits:The internship is unpaid, but presents a great opportunity to establish a record with a leading environmental organization and learn about environmentally-focused enterprises.
