The Pacific Forum CSIS with generous support from the Sasakawa Peace Foundation has established the SPF Fellowship Program to nurture the next generation of specialists who will be committed to broadening and strengthening the US-Japan alliance.

The Japan-US alliance has proven to be the bedrock of the two countries' security - and that of the entire Asia-Pacific region - for half a century. It is troubling then as our two nations celebrate 50 years of partnership that this vital alliance is encountering serious difficulties. While cognizant of the importance of their relationship and the benefits it brings to both countries, there are increasing doubts and suspicions in each country about the commitment of the other to the partnership.

To remedy this, the Pacific Forum CSIS with generous support from the Sasakawa Peace Foundation has established the SPF Fellowship Program to nurture the next generation of specialists who will be committed to broadening and strengthening the US-Japan alliance. Through a combination of resident and non-resident fellowships, the Pacific Forum CSIS will reach out to the next generation of leaders in our two countries and reinvigorate the security relationship. SPF Fellows are expected to develop and apply innovative and creative solutions to 21st century problems. They will focus on underdeveloped aspects of the relationship to help ensure that the alliance is ready to deal with current and future problems. By recognizing and addressing a wider range of issues and actors that are part of our partnership, we hope that SPF Fellows will ensure the resilience and effectiveness of our bilateral partnership for the next half century.
