German Chancellor Fellowship Program

German Chancellor Fellowship Program:
Calling Prospective Leaders and Young Professionals!

Please share this program information with students, colleagues, interns and professionals.

A German Chancellor Fellowship allows you to carry out a project of your own design in cooperation with a host in Germany you have selected for one year for professional development, study, or research. The aim of the program is to give young leaders the opportunity to spend an extended period of time in Germany at an early stage in their careers. After returning to their careers in their home countries, they have the potential to become - because of their intensive experiences in Germany - intermediaries between their home countries and Germany as they assume important positions in the fields of business, science, politics and society.

With the support of the German Federal Foreign Officer, the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation awards 10 German Chancellor Fellowships to young professionals from the United States. The program, which also includes a fellowship program for citizens from the from the People's Republic of China and the Russian Federation (see online). Additional program information and frequently asked questions (FAQs) can be found on the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation's website.

The German Chancellor Fellowship Program requires that the applicant has received their BA within the past 12 years at the time of the application. Prior knowledge of German is not a prerequisite. Candidates from all professions and disciplines, but especially individuals in the humanities, law, social sciences and economics, are eligible to apply to the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation directly.

It is considered a prestigious fellowship, and the alumni of the program typically have gone on to very successful careers (view alumni by subject). Information about the current fellows in Germany and a basic program overview can be explored in the 2011/2012 AvH German Chancellor Fellowship brochure.

Application deadline for U.S. applicants: October 15 (annually)
